Epic is a collaboration album by Berlin rappers Fler and Jalil . It was released on June 30, 2017 via Flers Label Maskulin as a standard and premium edition as well as a limited box set , and is distributed by Groove Attack . In addition to a perfume, the box set also contained the live album Vibe live and the EP Probation over by Fler.

background

The songs Should Be so and Preaching were already played live on the vibe tour for Fler's previous album. In the promo phase for Epic , Fler caused a sensation in the hip-hop scene by meeting rapper Farid Bang and finally making peace after many years of " beef " as well as by making a guest contribution to Bushido's recently released album Black Friday . In addition, Fler promised collaborations with Prinz Pi and the international rappers Gucci Mane , Future or Booba , but none of which ultimately came about.

content

In terms of lyrics, the album picks up on the typical hip-hop themes, in which the protagonists greatly enhance themselves and present their lifestyle and point of view, which is characterized by legal conflicts and luxury goods. In addition, there are battle rap elements against an indefinite "you" in the lyrics. Some public figures, mostly from the hip-hop scene, are mentioned in the lyrics of the album. These include Sentino , Miami Yacine , Peyton Manning , Rooz and Toxik Karoll from Hiphop.de , Oliver Marquart from rap.de and Davud from TV Strassensound . In addition, the rappers Kollegah and Silla are teased without mentioning their names. However, Fler said that he would have liked to have deleted the line of text with the swipe at Kollegah after the discussion with Farid Bang, but this happened after the album was handed in.

Music genre

From a purely musical point of view, the album is based on the contemporary trend around the US rapper 21 Savage and the mixtape What a Time to Be Alive by Drake and Future . In an interview with Aria Nejati from Hiphop.de , Fler said that he saw the musical style of Epic as a logical consequence of his previous album Vibe , on which - unlike Epic - he still paid attention to the music of German hip-hop adapt.

production

Fler himself acted as executive producer on the album . He worked on the production of the songs together with the music producers Nico Chiara, Simes Branxons, Iad Aslan, Grasser, Vov, Christopher Bauer, Remoe and Sinan Boomin.

Artistic support for this album also came from Prince Pi and Joshi Mizu . The latter recommended Fler to sing his verse forever in the hallway .

Cover design

The album cover of the standard edition is in black and white and shows the German model Sophia Thomalla , who is lightly dressed between two mirrors and looks down at the viewer. In the upper part of the picture there is the lettering Fler , Epic and Jalil in black on a white background. The cover of the premium edition is also black and white and shows a close-up of Sophia Thomalla, who is sitting on a sofa and looking at the viewer.

Guest Posts

In addition to Fler and Jalil, other artists are represented on three songs on the album. The rapper Mortel can be heard on the songs Should be so and Coogi , while the singer Remoe has a guest appearance on Gang forever . The latter song also features a voice message from rapper Kool Savas .

Max Brandl from laut.de rated Epic with three out of a possible five points. Fler and Jalil “largely mastered the art of creating an impressively dense atmosphere with just a few words, many repetitions and deliberately set pauses”. However, “a large part of the songs on Epic lack acoustic abundance”, which means that the “principle of the highly simplified catchphrase lyrics” often does not come into its own. The song Sermon , which is only available on the Premium Edition, is positively highlighted and referred to as a "super hit". Overall, Epic is "a good but mixed successor to Vibe , which shows in the form of a few, but outstandingly good songs, what the duo Fler & Jalil is capable of on tailor-made productions."

The sound carrier was rated positively on rap.de. Epic is “a coherent, sovereign complete work on which the two protagonists play out their strengths. And tell their story. ”Long live“ on the attitude of the two protagonists, who easily switch between threats of violence and the advertising of luxury items. ”The beats are“ first class ”and the two guest contributions by rapper Mortel are also praised. Only a few hooks were "a bit monotonous".

Steffen Bauer from MZEE was also extremely positive about the work in his criticism. It says there that “Fler is responsible for the most pointed announcements and a large part of the hooks”, while “Jalil shines especially through flow variations and the use of his distinctive voice”. Overall, it is one of the strongest albums in Flers discography. It is also emphasized that Jalil "in no way need to hide behind his mentor".
