List of geostationary satellites |
Es'hail-2 (also Es'hailSat-2 , Arabic سهيل سات -2, AMSAT name : AMSAT P4-A ) is a television and amateur radio satellite of the Es'hailSat Qatar Satellite Company from Qatar . It is the first amateur radio satellite in geostationary orbit.
Manufacturer
Unlike the Es'hail-1 satellite, launched in 2013 , Es'hail-2 was manufactured by Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (MELCO) in Japan . The satellite was created in a cooperation of the Es'hailSat Qatar Satellite Company , the Qatari Amateur Radio Association Qatar Amateur Radio Society (QARS) and the German amateur radio satellite association Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation-Germany eV (AMSAT-DL eV).
begin
Es'hail 2 was originally scheduled to launch as the primary payload of a Falcon 9 in the third quarter of 2017. After the explosion of a Falcon 9 during a routine test run on September 1, 2016, the date was postponed. The launch finally took place on November 15, 2018.
Designations
Es'hail
"Es'hail" is the Arabic name for the star Canopus . This becomes visible in the Middle East in the night sky at the beginning of autumn. In the tradition it symbolizes luck in the expectation of the approaching winter with good weather.
AMSAT P4-A
AMSAT P4-A is the name of the satellite for the 4th of 5 phases of AMSAT to differentiate between mission targets. Accordingly, the 4th phase is characterized by geostationary orbit as the new and final milestone for amateur radio satellites in earth orbit .
Qatar OSCAR 100
After successful tests, the OSCAR number 100 was assigned by AMSAT-NA on February 3, 2019 , so that the satellite also bears the designation “Qatar-OSCAR 100” or QO-100
Payload for the amateur radio service via satellite
AMSAT P4-A has two transponders, a narrow band (500 kHz) and a wide band transponder (8 MHz) in the S and X bands or 13 cm and 3 cm bands for amateur radio services via satellites . The operating modes SSB and digital amateur radio television (DATV) in DVB-S2 are proposed for the transponders . Due to the use of non-inverted bent pipe transponders, the only limitation in the selection of the operating modes for operation via the transponders is their bandwidth. The narrowband transponder enables, for example, the simultaneous use by 50 SSB users or 7680 PSK31 users. On the broadband transponder z. B. simultaneously either two DVB-S2 users in HDTV or several in SDTV quality possible. An alternating pseudo beacon in DVB-S2 and DVB-S via the dedicated AMSAT uplink from the Es'hailSat Satellite Control Center (SCC) in Qatar is planned.
On March 22, 2020, AMSAT-DL President Peter Gülzow announced that the frequency 10.48986 GHz downlink or 2.40036 GHz uplink was to be reserved as an emergency radio frequency on the narrowband transponder; AMSAT asked them for the emergency radio to keep clear.
Narrow band transponder | Frequency range [GHz] | Operating mode | Polarization type |
---|---|---|---|
Uplink | 2.4 2.4005 | SSB | RHCP |
Downlink | 10.4895-10.49 | SSB | vertical |
Wide band transponder | Frequency range | Operating mode | Polarization type |
Uplink | 2,4015- 2.4095 | DVB-S2 | RHCP |
Downlink | 10.491-10.499 | DVB-S2 | horizontal |
Special frequencies
Narrow band transponder | Frequency [GHz] | Operating mode | Polarization type |
---|---|---|---|
Lower beacon | 10.4895 | CW F1A | vertical |
Medium beacon | 10,489745 | BPSK | vertical |
Emergency radio | 10.48986 | SSB | vertical |
Upper beacon (experimental) | 10.489995 | CW F1A and others | vertical |
reception
watch TV
Es'hail-2 is supposed to provide the MENA region ( Middle East and North Africa ) with direct satellite reception. In addition, Qatari government authorities are said to also use the satellite transponders. The transmission takes place in the Ku and Ka band.
Amateur radio
AMSAT-DL recommends using a commercially available parabolic antenna with a diameter of 60–90 cm as well as an LNB and DVB-T stick as SDR or 3 cm LNA with transverter for the 70 cm band for reception . Because of the large coverage zone that can be reached from geostationary orbit , for example, connections from amateur radio stations in India, Brazil and the Antarctic are possible via the transponders.
Es'hailSat Satellite Control Center (SCC)
The Es'hailSat Satellite Control Center (SCC) is in Qatar. For AMSAT there are a total of three AMSAT Ground Segments in Qatar, for reasons of redundancy two at the SCC and another at the Qatar Amateur Radio Society (QARS) in Doha .
