Estelnic (outdated Estelnec ; Hungarian Esztelnek ) is a municipality in the Covasna district , in the Transylvania region in Romania .

Estelnic is also known under the outdated name Estilnic .

Geographical location

Location of the Estelnic municipality in Covasna County

The municipality of Estelnic is located north of the Kronstadt depression (Depresiunea Brașovului) in the southern foothills of the Nemira Mountains (Munții Nemira) - part of the Eastern Carpathian Mountains . In the so-called Szeklerland in the north of the Covasna district, the town of Estelnic is located on the creek of the same name, on the district road (Drum județean) DJ 114 16 kilometers north of the small town of Târgu Secuiesc (Szekler Neumarkt) and about 50 kilometers northeast of the district capital Sfântu Gheorghe (Sankt Georgen) removed. The nearest train station on the Târgu Secuiesc – Brețcu railway is located in the incorporated village of Belani (Bela) in the municipality of Poian ( Kézdiszentkereszt in Hungarian ).

The place Estelnic, which is mostly inhabited by Szeklern people, was first mentioned in a document in 1332.

At the time of the Kingdom of Hungary Estelnic belonged to the Kézdi chair district in the Háromszék County ( Romanian Comitatul Trei-Scaune ). Then Estelnic belonged to the historical Trei-Scaune (German three chairs ) and from 1950 to today's Covasna district. At first the present municipality belonged administratively to the municipality Poian and only in 2005 the three villages formed an independent municipality.

Since 1850 the highest number of inhabitants and that of the Magyars in 1941 have been determined in the area of ​​what are now the three places of the municipality of Catalina. The highest number of Romanians was registered in 1966, that of Romanian Germans (13) in 1910 and that of Roma (28) in 1930.
