There are numerous long distance walking routes in the United Kingdom that open up some of the most beautiful landscapes in England , Wales , Scotland and Northern Ireland . A distinction is made between UK National Trails , which are maintained by their own organization, and trails which are maintained by other groups and organizations.

The National Trails are managed by Natural England and the Countryside Council for Wales . They are official bodies of the governments of England and Wales responsible for the promotion and maintenance of long-distance hiking trails and bridle paths.
