The most outstanding football player of a season was honored annually in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) as Footballer of the Year . The prize was awarded by the trade journal Die neue Fußballwoche under the name Silver Football Boot. The players were elected by the sports editors of the daily newspapers in the GDR. The award was first given in 1963 and last for the 29th time in 1991. The first title holder was Manfred Kaiser , the last GDR footballer of the year was Torsten Gütschow .

The most successful players were Jürgen Croy and Hans-Jürgen Dörner , each with three awards. Bernd Bransch , Hans-Ulrich Grapenthin , René Müller and Joachim Streich have received two awards . The most successful club was Dynamo Dresden , which provided the footballer of the year a total of seven times. No GDR footballer was voted European or World Footballer of the Year .

Likewise, none of the GDR footballers of the year before reunification was voted all-German footballer of the year . Michael Ballack and Matthias Sammer were only named German Footballer of the Year after the reunification.
