Hancock County is a county in the state of Maine in the United States . The county seat, Shire Town of the county is in Ellsworth . The county is named after John Hancock .

geography

According to the US Census Bureau , the county has a total area of ​​6,089 square kilometers. 1977 square kilometers, corresponding to 32.47 percent, are water areas. The county is bordered clockwise by the counties: Penobscot County , Washington County, and Waldo County .

Parts of the county's rocky coast have been developed for tourism since 1916 through the Acadia National Park (originally Sieur de Monts National Monument , later named Lafayette National Park ).

history

Two of the county's sites have National Historic Landmark status due to their historical significance , the Daniel Coit Gilman Summer House and the Pentagoet Archeological District . A total of 125 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 11, 2017).

The county had 51,791 people as of the 2000 census . There were 21,864 households and 14,233 families. The population density was 13 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.61% White, 0.25% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, and 0.20% other races Groups; 1.15% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.65% of the population.

Of the 21,864 households, 28.20% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 53.50% were married couples living together, 8.10% were single mothers. 34.90% were not families. 27.90% were single households and 11.60% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.81 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 22.30% of residents under 18 years of age, 7.40% between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.50% between 25 and 44 years of age, and 26.80% between 45 and 64 years of age 16.00% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 95.70 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 92.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 35,811 , and the median income for a family is $ 43,216. Males had a median income of $ 30,461 versus $ 22,647 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,809. 10.20% of the population and 7.00% of families are below the poverty line. 11.90% of these were under 18 years of age and 9.50% were 65 years of age or older.
