Indoor handball
Point games
The indoor handball championship was initially held with 19 teams in the handball league with two regional relays. Instead of the four promoted players from the GDR league, there were only three newcomers in 1962/63, so that only nine teams competed against each other in Season II. The two season winners, Lok Magdeburg SO and SC DHfK Leipzig , who were determined after a double round, determined the indoor handball champions in a final. While two teams had to relegate from season I with BSG Lok Wünsdorf and BSG Traktor Neubrandenburg , there was only one relegated team in season II with engine Gohlis Nord Leipzig .

BSG Lok Magdeburg Southeast - SC DHfK Leipzig 11:10
In front of the 4,000 spectators in the Werner-Seelenbinder-Halle in East Berlin , an extremely exciting endgame developed that was on the knife edge until the final whistle. Despite the drama, the active players of both teams also delivered technical solo performances at high speed, which thrilled the audience. The physical effort that came to light was steered by the good Berlin referee Kutsche with consistent intervention through eight expositions in a fair way. The outstanding players on Magdeburg's side were Kurt Schwenk as a dangerous winger and Gerhard Stapf with his dangerous long throws. The Leipzigers had to do without their injured director Paul Tiedemann, but with Fährmann and Langhoff they had two clever playmakers. For more than a quarter of an hour the advantages lay with the BSG Lok, whose strikers made better use of their chances and shot out a 5: 3 lead. It was only when the DHfK players picked up the pace that they equalized 5: 5 in the 20th minute. But although Leipzig goalkeeper Franke increased with increasing playing time, he could not prevent the Magdeburg team from pulling away on two goals again. After that, SC DHfK had its best playful phase and came back to 6-7 by the half-time whistle. It almost seemed as if Leipzig could have turned the game around, in the 45th minute they were suddenly 10: 9 in front. The locomotive players were not deterred, however. In the 48th minute Nist managed to equalize again with a dust goal and with a converted penalty in the 55th minute Lok Südost ensured the final score in his favor.

Field handball championship 1963
Point games
Because of the participation of the national team in the field handball world championship, the games of the field handball league only took place in a simple round in the months of September and October 1963. 20 teams took part in two regional relays. After nine match days, the two season winners SC Dynamo Berlin and ASK Vorwärts Berlin were determined, who determined the field handball champions in a final.

Endgame field
ASK Vorwärts Berlin - SC Dynamo Berlin 28:23 (18:13, 13:13, 8:10) after 2nd loss.
The final of the GDR field handball championship in Dresden's Heinz-Steyer-Stadion with the two East Berlin teams ASK Vorwärts and SC Dynamo could not be beaten in terms of drama and needed two extra times or 100 minutes to reach the final decision. At first everything seemed to be going well for SC Dynamo. With excellent positional play and accurate attacks, the SC players did not give up the lead for which they had laid the foundation stone in the first five minutes with 4-0 goals until the regular half-time. The ASK army handball players did not find their playful line, their main players Hebler and Pappusch failed to shoot at goal, and cumbersome dribbles hampered the flow of the game. The ASK tried to keep up with long throws and combative rebellion, but only the sure penalty yield - four hits without a miss - kept the army handball players in the game. With 10: 8 goals for the SC Dynamo, the sides were changed. Two factors were decisive for the second half of the game. ASK brought in Schulze, a new goalkeeper who proved to be a reliable support, and SC Dynamo had to do without their striker Hirsch, who was injured in the 15th minute. Suddenly the dynamo players jammed while ASK attacker Hebler was in great shape. The army club owed him that he was able to hold a draw from the 50th minute on. The regular playing time finally ended 13:13. In the first extension, the better physique of the ASK players prevailed, who had shot out a two-goal advantage after just six minutes. Six minutes before the end of the first extension was 18:15 for ASK Vorwärts, but when the spectators were already expecting a final decision, SC Dynamo came up to 18:18 with a show of strength and forced a second extension. But since Matz, another attacker of the Dynamos, had to be injured, the ASK pulled away irresistibly and won in the end with a safe 5-goal lead.
