The Harras , official name Am Harras , is a square in Munich in the 6th district of Sendling at the confluence of Albert-Roßhaupter-Strasse and Plinganserstrasse. The neighboring train station and underground station are named after this square . From December 2010 the square was redesigned.

Surname

1856, the former was castle at Löwenhof (now about Plinganserstraße 38-42) at the fork of the roads from Munich to Wolfratshausen and Weilheim demolished a group acquired the innkeeper Robert Harras and established a café with outdoor restaurant, which to Harras was called and as popular excursion destination for the Munich residents. The café was also torn down in 1903, only the name survived in the name of the square that was created there, which was officially named in 1930.

Redesign from 2010

financing

The Building Department of the City of Munich, Civil Engineering Department, invested € 7,300,000 in the redesign.

Construction process

The Harras suffered from heavy traffic, which is why district committee 6 and the SPD and the Greens demanded a more convenient renovation for several years . Planning constraints arose from the existing stair access to the subway , the existing elevator, the necessary development of the surrounding business buildings (post office etc.) and the large number of bus routes with their necessary stops. In 2007 the city of Munich announced an architecture competition, which the Berlin office atelier pk won in February 2008 . The winning design intended to replace the existing traffic island in the middle of the square with a three-armed junction in the southern area of the Harras and to rededicate the northern carriageway to a pedestrian area. The Harras was thus divided into two areas: on the north side a larger square was created in front of the Wilhelminian style façades, and a smaller forecourt was created in front of the listed post office building on the south side. The Munich city council decided on the renovation in July 2010, and construction work began in December 2010. A functioning traffic intersection has been available since autumn 2011; the official completion and opening took place in June 2013. Following the redesign of the Harras, the Albert-Roßhaupter-Straße that begins at the Harras and runs westward was partially redesigned.

Traffic concept

At the approach to Plinganserstraße at the junction with Albert-Roßhaupter-Straße, a straight and left-turn lane was set up. After the junction, 2 lanes into town were marked on Plinganserstraße up to Lindenschmitstraße. In the outward approach to the junction with Albert-Roßhaupter-Straße, 3 lanes remained unchanged.

Albert-Roßhaupter-Straße is led from the underpass under the railway in 2 lanes to and from the square. On the square, from around house number 10, there is a lane for left-turners, so that Albert-Roßhaupter-Straße has five lanes in the area of the square. The location of the bus stops on the north side of Albert-Roßhaupter-Straße and the stops out of town in Plinganserstraße remained unchanged. The following adjustments were made in the course of deepening the planning: The bus stops in Plinganserstraße towards the city were moved around 20 m to the south at the request of Stadtwerke München . This means that passengers can take a shorter route to the central square by the subway entrance. The position of the traffic light-regulated pedestrian crossing is retained. The district committee and the district administration department had approved the relocation of the stops.

The pedestrian protection island on Albert-Roßhaupter-Straße at Am Harras 10 was moved about 6 m to the west. On the one hand, this enables the walking distance from the “central square” to the post office or the shops on this side, and on the other hand, taxis can turn around at this point and residents behind the post office can leave in both directions (east / west).

A cost-effective solution was found for the bus turnaround on Sylvensteinstrasse; the buses can now turn around shortly before the Sylvensteinstrasse / Plinganserstrasse junction. For this it was necessary to open the middle divider for the buses. The existing traffic light system had to be adjusted slightly for this. For the interim stop of the buses, the middle divider was attached at the level of Dudenstrasse over a width of around 4 m.

aims

The aim of the planning was the redesign and upgrading of the entire square area with improvement of the quality of living and amenity, the reorganization of the traffic management of the bus lines, individual traffic, taxi parking spaces and increasing safety for pedestrians and cyclists. In addition, benches, a fountain and 79 bicycle racks were set up.

traffic

Harras is an important transfer station for regional trains of the Bavarian Oberlandbahn , the Meridian , S-Bahn , U-Bahn and bus .

S-Bahn and regional trains

The trains of the S-Bahn line S7 to Wolfratshausen as well as those of the Bayerische Oberlandbahn (regional trains to Bayrischzell , Lenggries and Tegernsee ) and the Meridian (regional trains to Holzkirchen and Rosenheim) stop here . The S20 drives through without stopping due to a missing switch connection. The S-Bahn and regional trains cross Albert-Roßhaupter-Straße in a north-south direction on three tracks with a platform. The track for S-Bahn and freight trains in the direction of Pasing has no platform; it is discussed whether one should be built.

Subway

The U6 line of the Munich subway stops in Harras subway station, which opened on November 22, 1975 . Like most other stations, the station is 120 meters long and is supported by red-tiled rectangular columns. Until the opening of the further stretch to the west to Holzapfelkreuth on April 16, 1983, it was the terminus of the U6. U3 trains also ran here until October 28, 1989, before the south branch of the U3 was opened.

bus

The buses on lines X30, 53, 54, 130, 132, 134 and 153 stop in the underpass and at the Albert-Roßhaupter- / Plinganserstraße junction . Harras is one of the rendezvous places in the Munich bus network . This means that all lines that run here arrive at the same time and leave together a few minutes later. This allows time to change trains. In local dialect, the N40 night bus, which connects Schwabing and the city center ( Karlsplatz , Sendlinger Tor ) with the Harras, is also known as the “Harras Express”.

Private transport

The Albert-Roßhaupter-Straße crosses under the railway tracks west of the square. In the middle of the street in the area of the underpass was still the former route of the tram line until the renovation, here the last line was 26. The orphaned track was then used for parking and removed during the renovation of Albert-Roßhaupter-Straße. The tram was largely replaced by the U6 underground line.

Surroundings

South of the Harras is the post office building, built in 1932 by Robert Vorhoelzer and Robert Schnetzer for the post office administration of the Weimar Republic in the style of classical modernism , which is now used by Deutsche Post as a tenant. The ensemble consists of a flat and elongated white official building in front of it with a rotunda, behind which high blocks of flats rise up, giving the plaza wall depth, and, as a typical representative of New Building, manages without any decoration. The post office building lives through its volumes and proportions. It has been in private hands since 2001. In 2002 it was carefully renovated and in 2006 it was awarded the City of Munich's Facade Prize.

Also at Harras (Albert-Roßhaupter-Straße 8) is the city center south of the Munich adult education center and in the same building a district library of the Munich city library .

The Sendlinger Friedhof is located southeast of the railway overpass .
