About this picture

Heiligenberg is a municipality in the Lake Constance district in Baden-Württemberg in Germany .

geography

location

Heiligenberg is located in the upper Linzgau , about four kilometers north of Salem , and is located directly on an Ice Age moraine edge , which separates the upper and lower Linzgau up to 400 meters higher. Due to its location, Heiligenberg offers an exceptional panoramic view of Lake Constance and the Alps , which is why it is also known as the “viewing terrace of Lake Constance”.

Community structure

The community has the districts of Betenbrunn , Echbeck , Röhrenbach , Oberrehna, Unterrehna, Wintersulgen, Hattenweiler and Steigen.

climate

Due to the height, which is between 700 and over 800  m above sea level in the municipality . NHN , there is already a low mountain range here. It forms a striking contrast to the mild Lake Constance climate of the lower Linzgau: In contrast to the Lake Constance area, there are fewer humid days in summer and in winter the amounts of snow are significantly higher, which is why winter sports can also be practiced in Heiligenberg and the surrounding area . Due to these conditions, Heiligenberg has a healing climate.

Amalienhöhe

Amalienhöhe

Above the main town is the so-called Amalienhöhe (788.2 m), the seven linden trees of which were planted in 1843 and were intended to represent the children of the then princely couple Karl Egon II and Amalie.

history

Traces of settlement from the Stone Age have been found in parts of the municipality . The village was Christianized around 600 by St. Gallus . It is unclear whether the name Heiligenberg comes from this time or whether it referred to a local place of worship in pre-Christian times.

In 1083 the place was first mentioned as Mons Sanctus . In the 13th century, the Linzgauer Landgraves built a castle here, which was then the seat of the Counts of Heiligenberg and Werdenberg-Heiligenberg .

This passed into the possession of the Fürstenberg Princely House in 1535 and was converted into the magnificent Heiligenberg Castle . It is still owned by this family to this day. Heiligenberg is the summer residence of the head of the zu Fürstenberg family . The Alt-Heiligenberg Castle Rest is also located in the Heiligenberg district .

During World War II crashed on March 18, 1944 as "Winkelhof" of Betenbrunn a Consolidated B-24 - bomber of ( "Liberator") USAAF off after he Friedrichshafen had been hit. Four men of the ten-man crew were able to save themselves by parachute jumps.

Today's community was re-formed on January 1, 1975 by the union of the communities of Hattenweiler, Heiligenberg and Wintersulgen.

All districts of today's municipality of Heiligenberg belonged to the Überlingen district until 1972 .

Administrative association

Heiligenberg has joined forces with the communities of Salem and Frickingen to form a community administration association.

The local election on May 25, 2014 led to the following result (the difference to the previous election in 2009 in brackets). The turnout was 62.6% (2009: 62.2%).

CDU 42.4% (−6.1) 5 seats (−1)

coat of arms

Coat of arms of the old community of Heiligenberg

The municipality does not have an official coat of arms. The new award of a coat of arms, which, according to the wish of the municipality , should contain elements of the coats of arms of all old municipalities as the upper coat of arms , was not approved by the competent main state archive in Stuttgart, since municipal coats of arms usually do not have such an upper coat of arms (such as those contained in the large state coat of arms of Baden-Württemberg ).

The community therefore uses the coat of arms of the "old community" Heiligenberg before the territorial reform, which is based on the coat of arms of the Counts of Heiligenberg. Blazon : In silver a black stepped sloping beam (also called Heiligenberger Stiege ). This coat of arms is used - exceptionally for a municipal coat of arms - with a helmet and crest: On the spangenhelm with red and gold covers a red-tongued golden bracken trunk .

The coat of arms of the state of Baden-Württemberg appears in the official seals of the community.

Community partnerships

A partnership between Heiligenberg and the French community of Heiligenberg in Alsace has existed since 1968.

Economy and Infrastructure

traffic

The community is connected by bus lines with Frickingen , Salem and Überlingen , among others , and belongs to the Bodensee-Oberschwaben Verkehrsverbund ( bodo ).

Heiligenberg owns a glider airfield , which the Fluggemeinschaft Heiligenberg looks after and which members of the Markdorf glider pilots share.

economy

Tourism plays a special role . Heiligenberg is a state-approved climatic health resort .

The local medium-sized manufacturing, craft and service industries provide around 610 jobs.

Educational institutions

Heiligenberg has its own elementary school in the Wintersulgen district.

Cemetery / cemetery

In addition to a cemetery, there has been the Heiligenberg cemetery since summer 2007 and the Elisenruhe cemetery since spring 2015, in which natural burials are possible.

Culture and sights

Klause Egg
Swiss house

Heiligenberg is on the western route of the Upper Swabian Baroque Road .

Buildings

  • The Schloss Heiligenberg with great Renaissance - Knight's Hall , chapel and tomb can be visited.
  • The Schweizerhaus is a stately dairy farm that operated dairy farming until the 20th century.
  • The baroque Klause Egg was founded as a hermitage in 1256 , Trappist women moved in in 1971 , two of them still inhabiting the hermitage in 2010.
  • The Jacob's ladder above the Egg Klause is located about one kilometer east of the castle and is part of a hiking and walking path. The ladder consists of around 140 wooden steps. It leads up into the forest near Klause Egg. A Jacob Loch is said to have lived in the hermitage in 1361, who presumably built the ladder to cultivate the upper fields.
  • The St. Wendelin chapel and St. Benedict's hermitage on the remains of Ramsberg Castle are in the Hattenweiler district, but are traditionally more closely associated with Großschönach .
  • Burgstall Leonegg near Hattenweiler-Katzensteig.

Natural monuments

  • The around 130 to 140 year old striking beech in the former chestnut avenue near the castle courtyard had to be felled in early 2009. An expert opinion commissioned by the Fürstenberg House and the Fürstenberg Forest Administration had shown that up to 80 percent of the trunk was infested with cigarette fungus and that the stability of the tree was no longer guaranteed. After the felling, a coal-black, band-shaped coating could be seen on the bark, which continued into the inside of the trunk. It is a sign that the tree could not be saved.
  • The judicial linden tree is around 800 years old on the historic Postplatz. The prince's fountain with its bronze figures was set up next to it in 1914 . The square is the annual location for the "Heiligenberger Lindenfest".
  • The Friendship Cave is a natural cave below Augustplatz in the so-called Nagelfluh , an ice age deposit material that can be found in many places in Linzgau. It is not known when the name “Friendship Cave” came up. The friendship cave probably served as a place to live for a long time, as did the caves near Überlingen-Goldbach (" Heidenhöhlen "). It is documented that in 1688 a kind of house was built into the rock. The last "Hüllelema" (cave man) lived there until 1785, a day laborer from Leustetten with the name Hans Georg Sauter, who worked for the princes of Fürstenberg. The fireplace can still be seen today. Because of the poor condition of the apartment, he built a little hut a little further outside the cave.

Sports

With around 50 days of snow in winter on cross-country and downhill slopes, the community of Heiligenberg offers opportunities for various winter sports activities . The Haldenlift with floodlights is located in Wintersulgen . The Haldenlift went into operation in the 1969/70 season. The operator is the property owner. It has two parallel one-man T-bar lifts, each 300 meters in length. The former Betenbrunner lift at Winkelhof in Steinsbrunn was opened around 50 years ago, but no longer exists today. There is also a sledge slope in the so-called Rankental. There is also a network of cross-country trails around Heiligenberg. In addition to two classic cross-country trails and two skating lanes, there is the option of a 500 meter long floodlit cross-country ski run (classic / skating) on the sports fields towards Betenbrunn. The circular routes run over a length of four ( Betenbrunner-Loipe ) and ten kilometers ( Heiligenberger-Loipe ). The entrances to the trails are at the town hall and at the sports fields as well as in Unterbetenbrunn. There is also a loop with a length of one kilometer in the area of the Amalienhöhe. The ski interest group Salem-Heiligenberg-Pfullendorf (founded in 1980) supports the community in preparing the trails.

Hiking trails

The fourth and fifth stage of the Jubiläumsweg , a 111-kilometer hiking trail that was signposted in 1998 to mark the 25th anniversary of the Lake Constance district, ends in the center of Heiligenberg . It leads over six stages through the hinterland of Lake Constance from Kressbronn via Neukirch , Meckenbeuren , Markdorf , Heiligenberg and Owingen to Überlingen .

The panorama trails , two circular trails of 13.6 and 6.4 kilometers in length, begin at the large car park on the outskirts of the town near Heiligenberg Town Hall . The paths marked with special panorama path signposts lead through the mountain landscape of Heiligenberg and offer views of Lake Constance, Hegau, Linzgau, the Alps and the Black Forest at 1.493  m above sea level. NHN high Feldberg .
