Waters

The Holtmühle is located on the Mühlenbach, which begins in Herrath and flows into the Schwalm at the Molzmühle . The Mühlenbach has a length of 13,475 m. The beginning of the stream is 77 m above sea level. NN, the mouth at 61 m above sea level. NN. Between Kipshoven and Holtmühle, the Mühlenbach forms the city boundary between the Heinsberg district and the city of Mönchengladbach . The upstream mill pond is crossed by the mill stream in an east-west direction. Originally five mills were operated with water power on the Mühlenbach. The care and maintenance of the water is the responsibility of the Schwalm Association , which is based in Brüggen .

history

It seems to have got its name "Holtmühle" from its location in the still wooded area between Wegberg and Rheindahlen . It is no coincidence that the neighboring mill was called “Buschmühle” and the neighboring settlement “Busch”. It is unlikely that it was a sawmill for that reason . It is likely to have served much more as an oil and grain mill since 1397. It was only in the last few decades that she dealt exclusively with the grinding of grain . Since she had one of the largest reservoirs in the Wegberg area (except Tüschenbroich ), she had good prerequisites to be able to use her large medium-sized waterwheel with a diameter of 6 m, which was still running until 1954. Then the Holtmühle finally became an excursion restaurant. Experience in gastronomy was available. Already between 1870 and 1894 the Holtmüller ran a summer tavern, with coffee and free boat trips on the pond.
