occupation

I'm Not There is a 2007 biopic about Bob Dylan and directed by Todd Haynes , who co- wrote the script with Oren Moverman .

action

The film has no plot in the classic sense and is not structured chronologically. He shows characters in six different storylines, based on which facets from the life of Bob Dylan are represented. The episodes change between real, guaranteed scenes and philosophical, abstract meta-considerations. Among other things, it shows how Dylan starts playing the electric guitar ( Fender Stratocaster ) in 1965 (based on the film character Jude Quinn ). In addition, based on the western Pat Garrett chasing Billy the Kid , for which Dylan wrote the soundtrack, Richard Gere is shown as Billy the Kid (as a parallel to the older Bob Dylan), who initially only wants to lead a quiet life and then in one Art Comeback outwitted his old adversary Pat Garrett one last time.

Reviews

Robert Sulivan wrote in the New York Times on October 7, 2007 that the director had used recording techniques for each of the six storylines that were based on the work of renowned directors such as Jean-Luc Godard or Federico Fellini . This should reinforce certain aspects and statements that were intended with the respective episode and should also correspond with the fact that Dylan had appropriated the musical tradition of his country in order to create his own work. Haynes also wants to deal with the film tradition here.

The editors of the Österreichischer Rundfunk wrote that the director had "thrown all the rules of conventional biopics overboard". Cate Blanchett is "surprisingly convincing" in the role of Bob Dylan. In addition, a statement by Harvey Weinstein was quoted for the New York Times : "If Cate Blanchett doesn't get an Oscar nomination, I'll shoot myself".

Awards

Richard Gere , Todd Haynes , Charlotte Gainsbourg and Heath Ledger at the Venice Film Festival

In 2007, Cate Blanchett won the Coppa Volpi , the Acting Award at the 64th Venice Film Festival , for her interpretation of Bob Dylan . Director Todd Haynes and Abdellatif Kechiche ( La Graine et le mulet ) won the Silver Lion as the festival's greatest discovery .

Months later, when the nominations for the Independent Spirit Awards 2008 were announced, the film was nominated in the categories of film, directing and supporting actors (Cate Blanchett and Marcus Carl Franklin) and won the first-ever Robert Altman Award .

Edward Lachman received the Bronze Frog at the Polish Camerimage Festival .

The film title refers to the song I'm Not There (1966) which Dylan recorded with The Band during the Basement Tape Sessions in 1967, but which he did not release. With the film, the song was first "officially" released. The soundtrack includes the original Dylan / The Band version and a cover version of Sonic Youth .
