The place consisted of the three parts Inferno (so called for the first time in 1648), Purgatorio (destroyed by a flood of the Po and rebuilt as Brusa Vecchia ) and Paradiso (all three place names as in Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy ). The place became an independent municipality in 1818 by a decree of Viktor Emanuel I.
