content

The scientist Dr. Henry Jekyll firmly believes that he has invented a means that makes it possible to separate the evil from the good in people. However, the hospital's board of directors forbids the attempt on a patient. Henry Jekyll is mocked by society, only his friend and lawyer John Utterson and his fiancée Lisa Carew stand by him. Finally Jekyll opts for a self-experiment with fatal consequences. He transforms into the dark figure Edward Hyde, who from then on roams the streets of London murderously. Jekyll tries to stop the madness, but Hyde, who plays dangerous games with the prostitute Lucy, defends himself. Lisa is concerned about her fiancé and tries to bring him to his senses. Lucy has now fallen hopelessly in love with Jekyll, she has found in him all the good qualities that she also wanted for herself. Jekyll sends Lucy a letter with money through John, asking her to leave town immediately. He tells John that Hyde would kill her otherwise. When Lucy has made up her mind to start a new life elsewhere and wants to leave with her suitcase, Hyde shows up and assures her that he loves her. Lucy feels sorry for Hyde and comes closer to him, whereupon Hyde throws the noose of rope around her head and hangs her. In the furious final scene - everyone is on the stage, it should actually be the wedding of Lisa and Jekyll - the latter can no longer assert himself against the Mr. Hyde in him and asks John with the last of his strength as Henry Jekyll to redeem him by he shoots him. John asserts that he cannot do this, whereupon Jekyll finally turns into Hyde, laughs at John and wants to attack him. John struggles and Hyde is fatally wounded with two shots. Lisa and the dying Jekyll sing a final duet in which they once again affirm their love for one another.
