Jumanji: Welcome to the jungle

Jumanji: The Next Level is an American fantasy - adventure film by Jake Kasdan , the American US and December 13, 2019, the day before came to German cinemas. It's the sequel to Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle from 2017.

action

Two years have passed since the last adventure, the friends from back then are scattered in all directions after graduating from high school, but now want to finally see each other again during the holidays. Everyone seems to have done well, only Spencer has fallen back into his old role as a shy, inconspicuous nerd, and also ended the relationship with Martha because he does not look worthy of her. Spencer longs to go back to the time when he saw Dr. Bravestone , who was the hero and leader from the game. For this reason he had secretly got the old game console and patched it up poorly. On the evening before the planned meeting, he alone starts the console in the basement of his parents' house.

After Spencer does not show up at the agreed meeting of his friends, and does not respond to text messages or calls, they ring Spencer's parents. His grandfather Eddie lets the three of them in. Eddie has just got a visit from his ex-business partner Milo, who wants a discussion. Bethany, Martha and Fridge soon discover the console switched on, along with Spencer's jacket and cell phone, and it becomes clear that Spencer has returned to Jumanji. The other youth decide to follow him to rescue him. The only makeshift repairs lead to complications and the unsuspecting seniors Eddie and Milo also become avatars in the game, while Bethany remains in the basement alone in front of the console. Nobody could choose their character at the start of the game, and they quickly discover that the roles have been reversed: Grandpa Eddie is now in Dr. Smolder Bravestone's avatar, Milo became Mouse Finbar , and Fridge became Prof. Shelly Oberon . Only Martha "kept" her avatar Ruby Roundhouse . Nothing is seen of Spencer at first, and there is no indication in which avatar Spencer entered the game.

The character change quickly leads to various dangerous situations, which are often caused by the hasty action of Spencer's grandpa as Bravestone , as well as Eddie and Milo's inexperience with video games in general, and the characters lose their game lives faster than they would like. In addition, the special abilities of the avatars have changed slightly.

As in the first part, the characters first meet the NPC Nigel Billingsley , who explains their new mission to them and immediately tells them that the level of difficulty has been increased and that not all players will survive this mission. Instead of being in a jungle, the characters are now exposed in a desert.

Jürgen the Brutale has stolen a magical amulet, the "hawk heart", and now it is time to steal it from him and his henchmen and return it to its rightful owners, otherwise Jumanji is doomed.

After a series of adventures, the players manage to find each other: Spencer is in the avatar of Ming , a clever facade climber and pickpocket who almost managed to get the "falcon's heart " if Bravestone (Eddie) wasn't in wrong moment interfered.

Bethany seeks help from the only ally in the real world: Alex Vreeke, the Jefferson "Seaplane" Mc Donough from the first part. He can patch the console again, and both enter the game world of "Jumanji" again. While Alex becomes "Seaplane" again, Bethany is now in the avatar of a horse. They arrive just in time to save the other five from an almost hopeless situation.

Eventually the group succeeds in swapping their roles back in the game, so that Spencer becomes Bravestone again, Fridge becomes Finbar , and Bethany becomes Oberon , while Eddie and Milo take over the new avatars of Ming and Horse . This strengthens the final challenge, the attack on the fortress by Jürgen the brutal , and finally the mission is successfully mastered.

Again, he meets with Nigel Billingsley to end Jumanji and get back to reality. Only Eddie's friend Milo, who has cancer in real life and has only a few weeks of death left, remains in the game as a horse at his own request, fulfilling the prophecy that not everyone would return.

The film ends openly with a teaser about a possible further sequel: When the four friends leave the Café Nora’s in their homeland , a herd of ostriches (which they have already met in Jumanji) runs across the street.

reception

criticism

The film service describes the film as a “fast-paced roller coaster cinema” that “plays again with body images and gender clichés”, but appears “less surprising and innovative, but rather coolly calculated” compared to its predecessor. Filmstarts, on the other hand, writes that the film is "so entertaining that its already moody predecessor is even surpassed."

Gross profit

The budget of around 125 million US dollars is offset by worldwide revenues of 796.58 million US dollars, of which the film alone grossed 316.83 million in the North American region. This puts it in 10th place among the financially most successful films of 2019 and 90th (as of August 8, 2020) among the most financially successful films of all time . In Germany, the film recorded a total of 2,564,149 admissions, through which it was able to generate 23.87 million euros and is number 7 in the 2019 annual charts .
