politics

Schröter became a member of the Social Democratic Party in the GDR in 1989 , which became part of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) in 1990, and a year later became chairman of the SPD district association in Oranienburg . In May 1990 Schröter was elected district administrator for the Oranienburg district. From 1990 to 1994 he was also a member of the German Bundestag as a directly elected member of the constituency of Oranienburg - Nauen . In 1994 Schröter became district administrator of the newly formed district of Oberhavel as well as chairman of the Brandenburg district assembly and vice-president of the German district assembly . In 2001 he was re-elected as district administrator.

With regard to a possible reorganization of the federal territory , Schröter spoke out in 2000 for the creation of a large north-east state. This should be formed from the states of Berlin , Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Saxony-Anhalt with Schwerin as the capital. In 2006 Schröter was traded as a candidate for the office of chairman of the Brandenburg SPD, from which Matthias Platzeck withdrew at the time. In the Brandenburg education system, Schröter called in 2007 as a central reform a stronger decentralization of school policy. The municipalities, as sponsors of the schools, should also be given the responsibility for personnel for the teachers, which was previously the responsibility of the state. As part of the construction of Berlin Brandenburg Airport , Schröter pleaded in 2008 for the Berlin-Tegel Airport, which is threatened with closure, to be kept open . Otherwise he feared disadvantages for the economic development of Oberhavel.

In November 2009 Schröter was the council re-elected as Oberhavel district. The parliamentary groups of CDU , SPD and FDP had previously rejected an application in the district council to use an option of the Brandenburg municipal constitution and to have the new district administrator directly elected by the citizens. Some group members said that direct elections would be too risky for them. In 2007, Schröter himself described the discussion about direct election of the district administrators in Brandenburg as completely superfluous.

Schröter became Minister of the Interior of Brandenburg on November 5, 2014. After the formation of the Woidke III cabinet , he resigned from his ministerial office in November 2019.
