history

On July 25, 1952, a comprehensive district reform took place in the GDR , in which, among other things, the states lost their importance and were replaced by districts . From a part of the district Frankfurt (Or) which was circular Fuerstenberg formed of the newly formed district Frankfurt (Or) is assigned. The district seat was in the city of Fürstenberg (Oder) . On February 1, 1953, the city of Stalinstadt was spun off from the Fürstenberg district and became a district. On November 13, 1961, Fürstenberg (Oder) was combined with Stalinstadt to form the city of Eisenhüttenstadt and thus also left the district. The Eisenhüttenstadt-Land district was formed from the remaining district area .

On January 1, 1973 the communities Hohenwald and Lossow were incorporated into the independent city of Frankfurt (Oder) .

On May 17, 1990, the district was renamed the Eisenhüttenstadt district. On the occasion of the reunification of the two German states, the Eisenhüttenstadt district was awarded to the re-established state of Brandenburg in 1990. During the Brandenburg district reform it went on December 6, 1993 in the new Oder-Spree district .
