The women's 20 km walk at the 1999 World Athletics Championships was held on August 27, 1999 in the streets of the Spanish city ​​of Seville .

For the first time, the walking distance for women was twenty kilometers, which was the same as the shorter of the two walking distances for men. Previously, the women walked over ten kilometers.

In this competition, the Chinese walkers achieved a double success. Liu Hongyu became world champion . She won ahead of bronze medalist of 1996 about 10-km walk Wang Yan . Bronze went to the Australian World Cup third in 1987 - at that time over the distance of ten kilometers - Kerry Saxby-Junna .
