At the first census of France in 1793, the place had 688 inhabitants; In the middle of the 19th century the number of inhabitants rose to over 800 at times and then steadily decreased due to the mechanization of agriculture and the migration of parts of the population to the cities.

economy

The place was always characterized by agriculture. The greasy soils only allow the cultivation of rye ( seigle ); In earlier times, flour was also made from chestnuts and walnuts . In the 1970s and 1980s, several houses in the village were converted into holiday apartments ( gîtes ).

history

The existence of the place is probably due to the establishment of a priory of the Marcilhac Abbey in the 11th century. During the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) the former priory church Saint-Laurent was partially destroyed and - somewhat smaller - rebuilt. During this time the prestigious residence of the prior was built - known today as the Ancien Doyenné . In the years 1561, 1622 and 1637 Protestant militants conquered and devastated the place.

Others

  • The representative house of the prior ( Ancien Doyenné ) still has parts of walls from the 12th century; However, after the destruction in the Hundred Years' War and the Huguenot Wars, it was rebuilt more beautifully and larger. After the merger of the priory and parish in the 18th century, it was used as a rectory. The medieval round tower still shows some late Gothic windows with flat keel arches as the top; the actual residential wing was added at the end of the 16th century. The building has been on the list of historical monuments since 1991 .
  • The Musée Zadkine was established in 1988 in honor of the sculptor. Most of the sculptures shown here are copies from the Musée Zadkine in Paris. The artist's works are also shown in front of the church.
  • The wooded area is ideal for various walks and hikes.
