history

Russian Orthodox Cathedral in Lipetsk

A fortified Slavic settlement on the site of the present city presumably existed before the Mongol invasion of the Rus in the 13th century. It is first mentioned in the chronicles for the years 1283/84. In 1284 the settlement was completely destroyed during battles against the Tatar Baskak ( governor ) Achmat. After that, a village called Malyje Studjonki Lipskije is mentioned again only in the first half of the 17th century.

Tsar Peter the Great had the place re-established in 1703 as a settlement at the Lipskije zavody iron works . In 1779, the city received its current name as the administrative center of a Ujesds of the governorship of Tambov (from 1796 Tambov governorate ).

During the Weimar Republic , as part of the German-Soviet military cooperation under the Treaty of Rapallo from 1925 , the Reichswehr maintained a secret flying school and test site on the nearby Lipetsk airfield, where aircraft and weapon systems prohibited by the Versailles Treaty were developed and tested, and from 1926 Pilots were trained. On the German side, the "Flieger-Inspektion 1 (L)" was responsible for this. The project played a central role in the secret cooperation between the Reichswehr and the Red Army . With the seizure of power of the National Socialist government cooperation ended.

Today Lipetsk is the center of an iron ore mining area with steelworks, mechanical engineering and chemical industry. There are also medicinal springs and a sanatorium.
