Altenbrücker Torstraße

1, 3, 4, 5/6, 9/10, 11/12, 14, 15, 16 The street has existed since at least the 13th century. As long as a wooden bridge over the Ilmenau is documented, which used a ford to cross the river here . Hence the name Vor dem Altenbrückertore, which was changed to Altenbrückertorstraße in 1860. It is known that the von Wittdorf family took bridge payments in 1530. In 1581 the City Council of Lüneburg bought the bridge with all its obligations from Duke Wilhelm the Younger . The structure had to be replaced several times, the last wooden bridge was built in 1823/1824, but was replaced by the first stone bridge in 1876. In 1968/1969 the city widened the street, again a stone bridge was built at this point, whereby the historical bridge railing was reused. 1, 2, 3 Marienplatz is an area west of the town hall . Originally a church of the Franciscan monastery stood here. The church was surrounded by a cemetery. The church was replaced by a new building from 1576 to 1681, which collapsed at the end of the 17th century, but was rebuilt. The church was finally demolished in 1818/1819. The council library (Am Marienplatz 3) is what remains of the monastery buildings. The place is now a parking lot.

Monument , 1/1 a, 2/2 a, 3, 4 The road on Schifferwall was laid out around 1890. The name is derived from the former wall that ran here. From 1890 the street was built on. The Schifferwall memorial was created in 1939 based on a template by the sculptor August Waterbeck from Hanover: for the 13th cavalry regiment that had moved into the Schlieffenkaserne in 1936. There is also a memorial on the Schifferwall for a synagogue that existed here during the Nazi era . This was sold to the Chamber of Commerce and Industry on October 28, 1938 under political pressure and demolished. It is a simple stone with German and Hebrew inscriptions. 1 The street Am Wienebütteler Weg was named after the Wienebütteler Gut. The Lüneburg Psychiatric Clinic is located on the street . For psychiatric patients, a resolution was passed by the provincial administration in 1897 to accommodate psychiatric patients in suitable facilities, the reason being an endowment law from 1868. For these reasons, hospitals were built; these were called "insane asylums" and later "sanatoriums and nursing homes". The first phase of construction was completed in 1902, and wards for 800 patients were built. Between 1905 and 1907 additional ward houses for 1,000 patients were built. Between 1568 and 1572, the “Ratswasserkunst” was built at the Ratsmühle (near the Ratsmühle 16). This makes it one of the oldest water towers in Germany. Originally founded to compete with the "Abtswasserkunst" (near the Abtsmühle 2), the "Ratswasserkunst" mainly served the city and the saltworks to supply fresh water.
