history

The place was first mentioned in 1188 (“Pehstal” - place where pitch was collected). At that time the area around Pöggstall was transferred to the Benedictine Abbey of Kremsmünster . The aim was to build a branch monastery. In the end it remained with the construction of the Church of St. Anne.

The first parts of the castle complex were probably built around 1260 and were expanded later. Especially in the area of Pöggstall and Ottenschlag further north, the settlements consisted largely of hamlets and smaller lane villages . In 1407 Pöggstall was raised to the market. Regarding the settlement history in the area of today's Waldviertel, it must be mentioned that the southern part clearly differed from the northern places such as Zwettl. Due to the convenient location, the proximity to the Danube and the viticulture in this area, there was a further increase in the population and an expansion of the settlements in the 16th century. It was different in the north, where expansion stagnated as Bohemia was incorporated into the empire and no further border security was necessary. In Pöggstall there were 30 houses in 1450, 61 in 1590 and 108 in 1628.

From 1899 to 1939 Pöggstall was the main town of the then political district of Pöggstall (consisting of the judicial districts Persenbeug, Ottenschlag and Pöggstall).

In 1966 the communities Aschelberg and Pömmerstall, 1968 Loibersdorf and the cadastral communities Gerersdorf and Oed from the community Troibetsberg, 1971 Würnsdorf joined the market community Pöggstall. In 1972, state law merged with Neukirchen am Ostrong (which was only created in 1965 through the merger of the municipalities of Bruck am Ostrong, Arndorf and Mürfelndorf) and Weinling.

Population development

According to the results of the 2001 census, there were 2594 inhabitants. In 1991 the market town had 2732 inhabitants, in 1981 2892 and in 1971 2912 inhabitants.
