La Tractrion operates the entire narrow-gauge network of the CJ .
Without intermediate stations and without connecting railways.

La Traction maintains historic railway vehicles in a depot in Pré-Petitjean in the Swiss canton of Jura and has been running public journeys with steam traction on the entire narrow-gauge network of the CJ in cooperation with the Chemins de fer du Jura (CJ) since 1993 .

La Traction consists of two legal entities: La Traction SA, a public limited company based in Delémont JU, is the owner of the depot and the historic vehicles. The active members of the La Traction SE association maintain vehicles and real estate and manage train operations and administration.

history

La Traction depot in Pré-Petitjean

After the centenary of the opening of the Tavannes – Tramelan line in 1984, the desire arose to run steam trains on the CJ lines again. After the failed efforts to take over the rolling stock of the Ballenberg steam railway , La Traction SA was founded on July 4, 1991 , which negotiated with the Portuguese state railways Comboios de Portugal . In 1992 two suitable mallet steam locomotives were found in the Douro region . At the same time, La Traction was able to acquire an electric locomotive built in 1928 from Eusko Trenbideak - Ferrocarriles Vascos in the Spanish Basque Country. To restore the locomotives, the Patrimoine ferroviaire jurassien association was founded on April 23, 1993 and renamed itself La Traction SE in 1995 .

Also in 1992 a sawmill with a hall was for sale in Pré-Petitjean . This area was acquired in order to build a depot and workshop facility on it. The rail connection to the hall only came into operation in 1994. Steam operation could already begin in autumn 1993 after the E206 returned from the Meiningen steam locomotive works .

In the summer of 1997 a steam train ran daily on the Glovelier – Saignelégier route as part of the “150 Years of Swiss Railways” celebrations . In Glovelier , it offered a direct connection to an SBB steam train from Delémont . From 1998 to 2001, La Traction was able to build a four-track wooden hall in Pré-Petitjean to accommodate the extensive rolling stock.

The steam locomotives, designed according to the principle of Anatole Mallet from Geneva , were ordered by the Minho e Douro railway company from Henschel & Sohn in Kassel , and the machines with the numbers 404 and 456 remained in their possession until 1947. After the Minho e Douro railway company was taken over by the state railways, the two locomotives were given the designation E164 and E206.

The E164 locomotive with the Swiss designation G 2x2 / 2 comes from the E160 series with the E161 - E170 engines. The first four machines were delivered in 1905, the rest in 1908. The relatively heavy meter-gauge mallet locomotives with an operating weight of 42 tons were ordered for the Linha do Corgo , where they were also used. At the end of their operating time, they ran in suburban traffic from Porto as well as on the Linha do Tâmega and the Linha do Tua .

The larger E206 of type G 2/3 + 3/3 is from the E200 series (E201 - E216), which was built in 1911 and 1923 to operate the railway lines north of the Douro Valley. The E207 hauled the inaugural train between Celorico de Basto and Arco de Baúlhe of the Linha do Tâmega in 1949. Although the very heavy Mallets with an operating weight of 60 tons were designed as freight locomotives, they came on the meter-gauge lines north of the Douro Valley before all types of train the Vouga network. The last few years in Portugal they spent suburban traffic from Porto and on the two routes Linha do Corgo and the Linha do Sabor .

For use at La Traction, the two mallet locomotives received a new boiler , a compressed air brake instead of the vacuum brake and automatic + GF + clutches . The E164 could only be used regularly in the Jura in 2000. Its low-pressure chassis comes from the parked E169 locomotive.

The Gem 4/4 as a brand new Fe 4/4 21 railcar in 1916. The exterior of the vehicle was hardly changed, only the Lyra bars were replaced by pantographs .

In 1996, La Traction was able to acquire the Gem 4/4 122 twin-power locomotive from Regionalverkehr Bern – Solothurn (RBS). The then Electric Narrow Gauge Railway Solothurn – Bern (ESB) acquired the vehicle in 1916 as the Fe 4/4 21 luggage railcar from the Schweizerische Wagons- und Aufzügefabrik AG Schlieren-Zürich (SWS) and the Maschinenfabrik Oerlikon (MFO). The railcar with a wooden box did not undergo any significant changes. Only the lyra stirrups were replaced by pantographs in 1921 .

In 1922 the Fe 4/4 merged to form the Solothurn-Zollikofen-Bern-Bahn (SZB). In 1955 it was given the number 33, later it was referred to as De 4/4 33. Since 1961 it has had an oxide red paint instead of the previous green one. In 1973 he was to electro-diesel locomotive converted Gem 4/4 122 by the luggage compartment a Deutz - diesel engine was mounted type BF M 12 767, of a generator drives.

At La Traction, the locomotive could initially only be used as a diesel locomotive. The electrical equipment designed for 1200 volts had to be adapted to the CJ's contact line voltage of 1500 volts. The two-power locomotive has had its original green paintwork again since 2008. It is mainly used for shunting in Pré-Petitjean and for service trains from La Traction. The Gem 4/4 has also been running passenger trains for several years.

The CFe 4/4 railcar and the associated Ct4 702 control car reached La Traction in 2010 via detours. The two vehicles were in service with the CJ until 2003 as BDe 4/4 I 601 and Bt 702. Then the shuttle train came to the Bernese Oberland Railway (BOB), which wanted to use it to open up the Mystery Park , but it did not succeed. In 2006 the composition came to the Lausanne-Echallens-Bercher-Bahn (LEB).

The CFe 4/4 601–608 were delivered in 1953 by the Swiss Industrial Company in Neuhausen am Rheinfall and Sécheron . These vehicles can be formed into shuttle trains with the Ct4 701–706 control car or run in multiple control with the De 4/4 401–403 . In 1971 the top speed was increased from 60 to 70 km / h. Until 1986, the eight railcars managed practically all passenger traffic on the narrow-gauge network of the CJ.

La Traction restored the train, with it again being painted in dark red crème as on delivery. The interior of the railcar consists of faithfully restored wooden benches. A modern lounge was set up in the control car . The composition has been marketed as a “watchmaker's train” since 2013.

Tm II 10 in use at the MIB

In 2011, the Meiringen-Innertkirchen-Bahn (MIB) gave La Traction the Tm II 10 diesel tractor . The vehicle originally belonged to the series of standard-gauge Tm II 601-853 shunting tractors that Robert Aebi in Regensdorf (RACO) and Saurer from 1950 to 1968 delivered to the SBB. The spacious driver's cab allows the maintenance teams to ride along and a covered platform is used to transport materials. The vehicles are equipped with a Saurer diesel engine and a mechanical four-speed manual transmission . The two axes are driven by chains .

Vehicle no. 709, built in 1956, was converted to narrow gauge in 1987 so that the SBB could use it on the Brünig line , and was given the number 980. In 2010 it was taken over by the MIB, which gave it the number 10.

The tractor is used for shunting at the Pré-Petitjean depot.

On the occasion of the electrification of the Bilbao - San Sebastián line by Ferrocarriles Vascos, Brown, Boveri & Cie. (BBC) and Forges Usines et Fonderies Haine-Saint-Pierre ten four-axle electric locomotives. Because most of the locomotives were scrapped after the delivery of new rolling stock in the 1980s, La Traction was able to acquire the defective number 4004.

The central controller of the Ge 4/4 4004 damaged by a short circuit should be replaced by a contactor control. The locomotive was dismantled and parked in Pré-Petitjean for a long time, waiting to be overhauled. When the Gem 4/4 was able to operate below 1500 volts overhead contact line voltage , La Traction had an electric motor vehicle and the Ge 4/4 was canceled.

BCFeh 4/4 gear rail car 1

Xeh 4/4 91 of AAB ex SGA BCFeh 4/4 1 in Pré-Petitjean, 2006

When the St. Gallen-Gais-Appenzell-Altstätten-Bahn (SGA) was electrified, it purchased it in 1930/31 from the Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works (SLM), Brown, Boveri & Cie. (BBC) and Schweizerische Industrie-Gesellschaft (SIG) five BCFeh 4/4 1–5 rack-and- pinion railcars . They have two traction motors that each drive the two axles of a bogie via a cardan shaft. They were later given the designation ABDeh 4/4. In 1989 No. 1 was designated as Xeh 4/4 91 and used for roll-head trains. A traction motor bearing damage led to its scrapping in 1997.

In 2000 the railcar was taken over by the Appenzeller Bahnen (AB). After waiting several years in Pré-Petitjean for its restoration, it had to be abandoned in 2013 due to its poor condition.

business

La Traction offers public steam rides from May to September. There are also trips for groups with steam locomotives or electric locomotives. The vehicle collection in the Pré-Petitjean depot can be viewed on Saturdays.
