Men in Black II (also: MIB2 , MIBII or miib ) is an American science fiction - comedy from the year 2002 . It is the sequel to Men in Black from 1997 . Another sequel is Men in Black 3 from 2012 .

action

Agent J has worked his way up to the top agent after five years with the Men in Black (MIB), the supervisory authority for extraterrestrial activities in New York. Suddenly Serleena appears, a vicious kylothic monster who has taken the form of an underwear model. She is looking for the “light of Zartha” that the Zarthan people brought to earth 25 years earlier in order to hide it there. The Men in Black were not allowed to keep it in order to preserve the neutrality of the earth and supposedly sent it into space. However, the agent responsible for the case at the time seems to have hidden it somewhere on earth. The light is so powerful that it enables every owner to have complete control over the planet Zartha.

But first, Agent J has to investigate the murder of an alien who runs a pizzeria disguised as a human. He meets the employee Laura Vasquez, who observed the incident, and receives initial clues about Serleena and the "Light of Zartha". Contrary to the regulations, he does not neuralize Laura, but leaves her with the memory of the MIB and the extraterrestrial origins of her murdered employer.

Agent J follows in the footsteps and finds further information in the MIB archive: 25 years ago his old partner Agent K was entrusted with this case. However, his memories of the MIB were erased when he left five years ago in order to be able to reintegrate him into society, and he is now Chief Postmaster in Massachusetts under his real name Kevin Brown.

The Zarthan people have now issued an ultimatum. They demand the release of the light, otherwise they destroy the earth. However, when the light falls into Serleena's hands, it will destroy the planet Zartha. Since K is the only one who can save the earth and Zartha, J should bring back the memory and the agent K with a deneuralizer. Serleena occupies the MIB headquarters and keeps the employees and aliens prisoner. K and J escape capture by being flushed out of the MIB headquarters. Immediately they seek out the alien fence Jack Jeebs, who illegally recreated a deneuralizer. However, since the device has never been tried before and does not seem to work properly, K still does not remember the “Light of Zartha” afterwards and his memory of the MIB is only gradually returning. However, before his voluntary neuralization he laid down clues so that he can find the light again in an emergency. Together, the two partners follow the trail to the light, but Serleena remains close on their heels.

The light turns out to be Laura Vasquez, who has lived in New York since she was born but knows nothing of her true identity. She is actually the heir to the throne of Zartha. With the help of the wormlings, K and J free the MIB headquarters. They let Serleena eat up by a giant worm living in the subway, from which she is able to free herself. In the end, it is implied that K is Laura's father who loved the princess who came to earth with the light and asked him to hide the light. At the last second, Laura can be sent back to Zartha just before the ultimatum expires. J, who fell in love with her, has to accept this with a heavy heart. Together with K they shoot Serleena, who is pursuing Laura.

Guest roles

Michael Jackson has a small guest role in which he tries to join the MIB as Official Agent M , but is turned away. Peter Graves , best known as the leading actor in the television series Kobra, Take Over , plays himself at the beginning of the film as the host of the fictional television show Mysteries from Space . Even David Cross played in the first part of Men in Black with, there he played in the right medicine to the doorman.

Success and reception

“The script writers Robert Gordon ( Galaxy Quest ) and Barry Fanaro ( Kingpin ) trust the comedy recipe of the original, build the most popular ETs from the original [...] and introduce a number of new Gaga aliens into the 'MIB' universe. [...] As always with Sonnenfeld, one comedy gimmick follows the other without the episodic structure being geared towards a spectacular finale. 'Men in Black II' is popcorn cinema in its purest form - and […] one of the most expensive live-action films since there were aliens. "

“With its unusually tight 89 minutes, 'Men in Black' is an entertaining, but like its predecessor, it hardly sticks in the memory for a long time, a humorous, weird, but at no point really snappy science-comedy action that appears to be again irreconcilable genres mixed up into brightly colored popcorn entertainment. "

"Turbulent continuation of the science fiction blockbuster from 1997, which, like its predecessor, is entertaining mainly through the numerous show values and two brilliantly presented leading actors."

Just like the first part ( Men in Black ), the sequel was also a commercial success, although it didn't quite match the popularity of the predecessor. At $ 140 million, the film grossed $ 190 million in the United States and $ 251 million in the rest of the world, for a total of $ 441 million. The film opened in German cinemas on July 18, 2002.
