history

The Town Mercer was organized on June 22, 1804. The area was organized in 1799 together with the "Black Settlement" as an Industry Plantation. The Black Settlement now forms the Town Industry. Originally the area belonged to the Plymouth Claim (Kennebec Purchase).

Portions of Starks were added in 1835 and 1865. Land was given to Smithfield and New Sharon in 1840, and to Norridgewock in 1849 and 1852.

The first local settler was the Brigadier-General of the American Revolutionary War Hugh Mercer, after whom the town was named.
