Mercer is a town in Somerset County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 664 inhabitants in 399 households on an area of 70.86 km².

According to the United States Census Bureau , Mercer has a total area of 70.86 km², of which 69.18 km² is land and 1.68 km² consists of water .
Geographical location
Mercer is located in southwest Somerset County and is bordered by Franklin County to the west and Kennebec County to the south. The Sandy River , flowing in a southerly direction, forms the northern border of the area. The Mercer Bog Wildlife Management Area is centrally located in the area . The North Pond borders in the southeast . The surface is slightly hilly, the 177 m high Beech Hill is the highest point in the town.

history
The Town Mercer was organized on June 22, 1804. The area was organized in 1799 together with the "Black Settlement" as an Industry Plantation. The Black Settlement now forms the Town Industry. Originally the area belonged to the Plymouth Claim (Kennebec Purchase).
Portions of Starks were added in 1835 and 1865. Land was given to Smithfield and New Sharon in 1840, and to Norridgewock in 1849 and 1852.
The first local settler was the Brigadier-General of the American Revolutionary War Hugh Mercer, after whom the town was named.

US Highway 2 runs through Mercer in a west-east direction. The Maine State Route 137 branches off in a southerly direction from him.
