Settlement in the area began in 1800. Milford was organized on February 28, 1833 as an independent town. Before that there was an organization called Sunkhaze Plantation . It was originally named Township No. 3 Old Indian Purchase, East of Penobscot River (T3 OIP EPR) .

The area was surveyed from 1801 on behalf of Massachusetts. One of the surveyors, Joseph Butterfield, returned with his family in 1802 and settled here. The first sawmill was built in 1826. Others followed.

The Bodwell Water Power Company Plant is a historic building and landmark on the banks of the Penobscot River.

The Sunkhaze Meadows National Wildlife Refuge is centrally located in the Milford area.
