The county is located in southeastern West Virginia, bordering Virginia, and has an area of ​​1,227 square kilometers, of which one square kilometer is water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Greenbrier County , Alleghany County, Virginia, Craig County, Virginia, Giles County, Virginia, Mercer County, and Summers County .

Monroe County was formed on January 14, 1799 from parts of Greenbrier County. It was named after James Monroe , the fifth President of the United States.
