National Women's Soccer League 2013 / Player Allocation

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the National Women's Soccer League Player Allocation ( Engl. Allocation of players ) before the 2013 season the eight participating at the newly founded NWSL were franchises by an expert committee 55 internationals assigned to the United States, Canada and Mexico. The football associations of the United States , Canada and Mexico had previously agreed to take over the salaries of these players in place of the clubs assigned. The results of the assignment process were announced on January 11, 2013.

process

Abby Wambach was elected world soccer player a few days before being assigned.

The three participating football associations selected 23 (United States) and 16 (Canada and Mexico) national players who were to play in the NWSL with financial support from their home associations. The aim of this approach was to keep the team budgets of the franchises represented in the NWSL manageable and still ensure that the national players of the associations involved would be able to play and play in the newly founded professional league. All 18 players who won the soccer tournament at the 2012 Summer Olympics a few months earlier were among the US candidates .

Each of the eight franchises submitted a prioritized list of the players they wanted to sign for each of the three nation pools before being allocated. In turn, all players chose four of their preferred teams, as well as one they definitely didn't want to play for. These wish lists were then compared by a committee consisting of representatives from the college sports environment, the clubs, and the youth and senior national teams concerned. During the assignment process, attention was also paid to ensuring that the playing strength of the resulting rump squad was as balanced as possible.

The assignment was made on January 9, 2013 and the results were announced two days later. Each team, with the exception of the Western New York Flash , received three US and two Canadian and Mexican internationals. The flash received only two US players who a few days of these was to compensate for previous World Player 2012 elected Abby Wambach .

Before the first matchday of the 2013 season on 13/14 April 2013 the following changes were made to the assigned national players:

Note 1 Amy Rodriguez announced in January 2013 that she would not be available to her team in the 2013 season due to pregnancy.
Note 2 Keelin Winters joined Seattle Reign FC on March 1st .
Note 3 Heather Mitts announced her retirement from professional sports on March 13th.
Note 4A few weeks before the start of the season it was announced that the Mexican players Marilyn Díaz , Marlene Sandoval and Luz Saucedo would ultimately not receive any approval or financial support for the NWSL from their association. In the case of Sandoval, this was justified with an injury to the player, the other two players seemed to the association not suitable for the NWSL due to a lack of fitness. At first it remained unclear whether the clubs concerned would be compensated for the competitive disadvantage suffered as a result.
Note 5 Alina Garciamendez took part in a trial training session at 1. FFC Frankfurt in April 2013 and then signed a contract there from the 2013/14 season . As a result, she was no longer in Washington's squad and so did not come to any season in the NWSL.

consequences

Tobin Heath was the last of the assigned internationals to join her team.

The eight NWSL franchises were able to expand their team roster during the college draft conducted in Indianapolis on January 18 . In addition, the supplemental draft was carried out and the engagement of so-called free agents , i.e. players without a contract, was possible.

The allocation of players who were under contract with European clubs and were therefore only available to their teams after the end of the European 2012/13 season in early summer turned out to be problematic. For example, while Teresa Noyola left her previous club ADO Den Haag before the end of her contract in order to join the franchise allocated to her before the start of the season, Megan Rapinoe (previously Olympique Lyon ) only made her debut on June 23 in the eleventh game of the Seattle Reign FC . Tobin Heath ( Paris Saint-Germain ) was only available to Portland Thorns FC from mid-July, the 15th of 22 regular season games .

The player Kristie Mewis ( FC Kansas City ) was raised to assigned player status during the 2013 season and her salary was taken over by the USSF from that point on .

It was initially unclear whether, and if so for how long, the player allocation made would continue beyond the 2013 season. However, observers concluded from contract details that became known during player transfers that the allocation would remain in place for at least the 2014 season . This assumption was partially confirmed in the context of the 2014 Player Allocation announced on January 3, 2014 , in particular with regard to the assigned players from the United States.
