Nazareth is a Belgian municipality in the Flanders region with 11,619 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019). It consists of the two districts Nazareth and Eke .

location

Ghent is 13 kilometers northeast, Bruges 38 km northwest and Brussels around 55 km east. The next motorway exit is Deinze on the A14 / E17 in the immediate vicinity of the community. There is a regional train station in the district of Eke, there are others in Deinze, Gavere and De Pinte .

Origin of name

The name of the municipality is mentioned for the first time in 1259. There is disagreement about the origin. According to the prevailing opinion, the place was named after the biblical Nazareth of the same name . The theory that the name "magherhet" (in German: arid Heide) is misspelled is less likely .
