to Grunow (Niederlausitz)

The Falkenberg – Beeskow West line is a branch line in Brandenburg known as the Niederlausitzer Eisenbahn . It begins at the Falkenberg (Elster) railway junction and leads via Luckau and Lübben to Beeskow . There it meets the Grunow – Königs Wusterhausen railway , which continues to Frankfurt (Oder) . It crosses the districts of Elbe-Elster , Dahme-Spreewald and Oder-Spree and thus, with the exception of the first section, most of the eponymous Niederlausitz . Today it is only used in freight traffic to operate several sidings and is owned by DRE .

history

Ownership:

Niederlausitzer Eisenbahn AG (NLE AG)

Ordinary share for 1000 marks of the Niederlausitzer Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft from April 1, 1898

The Uckro Süd– Luckau section was opened on December 20, 1897 as the first section of the Niederlausitzer Railway . By March 15, 1898, the Falkenberg / Elster - Lübben Hp section was fully established, so that Niederlausitzer Eisenbahn AG could start operations on April 1, 1898. The remaining section to Beeskow West followed on November 24, 1901. The NLE AG, which was majority owned by the districts of Schweinitz , Luckau and Lübben , had to struggle with financial difficulties from the start. It was not until the Second World War that the railway experienced an upswing in freight traffic through the ammunition factories in Rochau, Spreewerk Lübben and Krugau and the connection to Alteno airfield. After the end of the war, these sidings had to be dismantled as reparation payments to the USSR .

Shortly before the end of the Second World War, the Spree bridge near Briescht was blown up on April 25, 1945, so that train traffic had to be stopped. In 1948, train traffic was resumed between Lübben and Spreebrücke Briescht and from the eastern side of the Spree to Beeskow West, although the Spree bridge was still closed and travelers had to walk about 400 meters. The bridge was then restored in 1951 so that through traffic Lübben – Beeskow West was possible.

German State Railroad (DR)

There were almost no continuous trains on the NLE; As a rule, after the takeover by the Deutsche Reichsbahn , the trains ran from Falkenberg / Elster to Luckau or Lübben Hbf and from Luckau or Lübben Süd to Beeskow. The train service was relatively high on the sections between Falkenberg / Elster and Herzberg (Elster) Stadt and between Uckro and Lübben for a branch line in rural areas.

After the division of Germany in 1945, the route became the focus of the military. The fact that it connected 3 main lines leading to Berlin, but bypassed Berlin itself widely, gave it the status of a strategic railway . It was upgraded from a secondary to a main line, whereby u. a. the axle load was increased to 20 tons.

Individual trains also had destinations outside the NLE: For example, in the 1986/87 timetable there were connections from Lübben via Uckro to Elsterwerda. In the event of disruptions on the Dresden railway or on the Berlin outer ring , long-distance trains on the Dresden – Berlin route were rerouted via the Uckro – Lübben NLE section. In addition to the 132 series, the 110 and 112 series , which operate on the NLE, were also used as locomotives .

The last DR timetable year 1993/94 provided for relatively heavy traffic on the NLE on all weekdays. Five pairs of trains ran between Falkenberg / Elster and Luckau (route book route 213), and between Falkenberg / Elster and Herzberg these were even compressed to ten pairs of trains. Just as many pairs of trains ran between Uckro and Luckau. In the course book table 208 three daily train pairs were listed between Luckau and Beeskow, which were supplemented by another train pair between Lübben Süd and Beeskow. In accordance with the importance of the city and its function as the center of operations, Luckau was connected to Lübben Hbf with nine daily trips. In this timetable year there was a continuous pair of trains between Falkenberg and Beeskow, for which a journey time between three and three and a half hours was planned.

Deutsche Bahn AG (DB)

The Deutsche Bahn AG operated the line between 1994 and 1998. This time was characterized by the partial suspension of passenger rail traffic on the entire NLE. Most recently, the passenger train took 17 minutes for the four kilometers between Uckro and Zöllmersdorf. Due to the boggy subsoil and the poor condition of the wooden sleepers, this section was closed to operations in February 1996. Although the preparations for the route renovation had already begun, the local rail passenger traffic between Herzberg and Beeskow was canceled by the state of Brandenburg . If necessary, freight traffic was continued from Lübben in the direction of Krugau (Bundeswehr) and Luckau (cement). The route between Krugau and Beeskow was closed for business.

German Regional Railway GmbH (DRE)

Rochau Forst, December 9, 2007

After almost three years of negotiations, the private railway Deutsche Regionaleisenbahn GmbH (DRE) (the name at the time was Deutsche Regionalbahn (DR) GmbH) on behalf of the German Railway Customer Association (DBV) took over the route from Herzberg (Elster) to Beeskow from the DB on December 31, 1999 taken over and thus saved from the planned shutdown for 15 years. The aim was to show that rail transport in sparsely populated rural areas can be maintained even without major state subsidies. This should be made possible by a combination of freight and passenger transport. However, it turned out that this goal cannot be achieved with sparse traffic.

To restore the route, the State Garden Show 2000 in Luckau offered itself , for which a special traffic between Lübben and Luckau was set up. However, the requested order of transport was rejected by the state of Brandenburg in order to avoid a precedent. The NLE was also not included in a train / bus combination ticket, as the Dahme-Spreewald district, as the owner of the Regional Transport Company Dahme-Spreewald mbH (RVS), refused. The consequence was a relatively low utilization of the DRE trains.

In the 2000 annual timetable, three pairs of journeys between Luckau-Uckro and Lübben were planned on weekends between May 28 and October 15, with one pair of trains being extended to Herzberg (Elster) city and Falkenberg (Elster). However, the state representative for railway supervision (LfB) of the state of Brandenburg has already banned the MAN railbus from operation after three days because of the lack of approval for this state. However, since the railcar was approved for Germany, it was able to resume operation in December (the trips took place on the weekends of December 9th, 10th and 16th and 17th, 2000).

Another major event was the 6th Brandenburg Day in Luckau on September 1 and 2, 2001. For this purpose, hourly regular traffic between Lübben and Luckau-Uckro was set up with two trains, each turning in Luckau. Individual journeys were extended to Groß-Leuthen-Gröditsch or Falkenberg (Elster). Otherwise, the seasonal timetable from June 10 to August 31, 2001 again provided for passenger traffic between Falkenberg and Groß Leuthen-Gröditsch on weekends and public holidays.

The timetable from June 16 to November 3, 2002 provided for four pairs of trains between Lübben Süd and Groß Leuthen-Gröditisch on weekends. A pair of trains was extended to Alt Herzberg and Luckau-Uckro.

In 2003 (April 18 to November 2), only three pairs of trains were supposed to run between Lübben Süd and Groß Leuthen-Gröditisch on weekends, two of which started or ended in Luckau-Uckro. On September 14, 2003, the Uerdingen rail bus 798.01 , which had recently undergone a major inspection, was shut down by the LfB with administrative assistance from the police due to alleged technical defects. As a result, a short-term rented rail bus of the Hochwaldbahn was used the following weekend. However, since the low demand did not cover the rental costs, operations on the NLE were stopped prematurely on September 26, 2003.

In 2004, the start of the season had to be postponed to May 1st due to track work in the Berga area. The annual timetable ended on October 3rd. In contrast to the previous year, Alt-Herzberg is served once on Sundays and public holidays with the newly used Uerdingen rail bus . On a total of five weekends there was condensed special traffic between Alt Herzberg and Schlieben.

In 2005, despite the published annual timetable, there was no rail passenger transport on the NLE except for trips to the Schliebener Moienmarkt. This was due to construction work at various points (route rehabilitation east of Luckau-Uckro, rehabilitation of the bridges over the Schwarze Elster in Herzberg and over the Dresdener Bahn near Langengrassau, new construction of platforms and renewal of the level crossing protection on the federal highway 87) as well as the reconstruction of the route between Groß Leuthen-Gröditsch and Beeskow required. However, the latter has not yet been implemented.

After lengthy preparation (track renovation, platform construction, storage hall, modernization of the rail bus), the anniversary trip of the Elbe-Elster-Express citizen railway project between Falkenberg (Elster) and Schlieben took place on June 30, 2006. In the Leader + region of forest and heathland in the Elbe-Elster district, the idea of the Deutsche Bahnkundenverband (DBV) to maintain or re-establish local rail passenger transport in rural areas through its own initiative . The idea of the citizens 'railway is based on the numerous citizens' bus projects in which volunteer drivers with minibuses enable public transport in rural areas.

The 2006 annual timetable provided for four pairs of Elbe-Elster-Express journeys between Falkenberg (Elster) and Schlieben on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from July 8th to December 9th, with two pairs of trains being extended to Luckau-Uckro.

In 2007, the annual timetable was valid on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from June 29 to October 7, 2007 and provided for trips by the Elbe-Elster-Express on the section between Mühlberg / Elbe and Hohenbucko-Lebusa. Mühlberg / Elbe was connected by rail for the first time in 46 years on Saturdays (until August 29, 2007). On Sundays, three pairs of trains were driven between Falkenberg (Elster) and Hohenbucko-Lebusa. However, the main vehicle VT 798-01 of the DBV-Förderverein Elbe-Elster-Express could only be used from July 26th due to a repair. Before that, diesel multiple units were leased from three different railway companies or, for economic reasons, replacement rail services were set up.

Special services with up to ten pairs of trains ran in 2007 on the occasion of the following events on various sections of the route between Mühlberg / Elbe and Luckau-Uckro:

  • 414th Schliebener Moienmarkt (June 29th to July 1st)
  • 777 years Mühlberg / Elbe (July 6th to 8th)
  • Falkenberg-Kiebitz beach festival (3rd to 5th August)
  • Herzberg Christmas Market (December 8th)
  • Rochau Forest Christmas (December 9th)

The 2008 annual timetable (May 1 to October 5) provided for the new Elbe-Spreewald-Kurier product on Sundays and public holidays, which provides for the first connection from Riesa to the Unterspreewald via Falkenberg (Elster). Before that, the journey ended in Lübben, as the destination Groß Leuthen-Gröditsch, which was actually planned for June 1st, could not be reached due to problems with the drivability of the route. The idle time of the rail bus until the return trip to Riesa was used for a trip to Uckro ( Unterspreewald courier ). The originally planned connection from Riesa with a second pair of trains every Sunday through the Elbe-Elster-Express had to be canceled for cost reasons. This drove a pair of trains between Mühlberg / Elbe and Luckau-Uckro on Saturdays. With this spatially expanded offer, a stronger tourist demand was expected.

However, the originally planned additional Sunday train pair Riesa – Schlieben of the Elbe-Elster-Express could not be realized due to the high cost demands for signal box manning of DB Netz AG. There were also increased failures of the DRE rail bus towards the end of the driving season, so that it was terminated prematurely on October 3rd. The premature discontinuation of the Elbe-Elster-Express at the end of the 2008 timetable year was also justified by the low demand and the lack of financial support from the municipalities and regions concerned, so that it was not possible to operate at full cost.

The regular trips (Elbe-Elster-Express, Elbe-Spreewald-Kurier) were rather poorly used, while special trips on special occasions (especially Schliebener Moienmarkt, Rochauer Waldweihnacht) were very well received. This regularly resulted in overcrowding of individual trips or even leaving passengers behind. But this was also due to vehicles that were too small.

Since December 2008 there has been no more scheduled passenger traffic on the NLE.

At the beginning of May 2010, the Uckro Süd – Lübben – Groß Leuthen-Gröditsch section was closed, as several sections and the bridge over the Görlitzer Bahn were to be renovated. The renovation work began in early 2011 on a moor near Paserin. In addition, switches were installed in Uckro for reconnection to the Dresden Railway . A connection proposed by the Deutsche Bahnkunden-Verband from Lübben via the NLE to Uckro during the one-year closure of the Königs Wusterhausen – Lübbenau line was rejected by the DB. In mid-January 2013, the work was partially completed, so that the Duben – Lübben – Krugau section, which is important for the operation of goods traffic, could be used again.

On March 29, 2013, the DRE tendered the sections Groß Leuthen-Gröditsch-Beeskow and Schlieben-Uckro Süd for takeover by third parties. After no new operator could be found, the sections were shut down. In November 2013, the DRE began dismantling the rails in the Groß Leuthen-Gröditsch-Beeskow section, as, according to Managing Director Curth, the rails had already been stolen over a length of two kilometers.

In addition, the Falkenberg – Schlieben, Uckro Süd – Duben and Börnichen-Schlepzig – Groß Leuthen-Gröditsch sections have been closed for several years.

On June 30, 2015, the western, 22-kilometer-long Falkenberg – Schlieben section was put out to tender in two parts for takeover by other railway infrastructure companies because the high maintenance and investment costs were not offset by any income. A month later, the tender for the 15-kilometer section Uckro Süd to Duben was issued. At the beginning of 2016, with the exception of the level crossings, the track systems between Herzberg and Schlieben were dismantled. The Federal Railway Authority approved the closure of the Falkenberg – Herzberg section on December 31, 2015. So far, however, the tracks have remained in place because DB Netz is the owner of this section. Efforts are being made to offer trolley rides on this section.

The ailing station building at the Lübben stop was demolished in 2016.

passenger traffic

From 2000, passenger traffic was again operated on the route by the DRE as weekend traffic in the summer half-year, and there were also trips to various special occasions, for example to the Schliebener Moienmarkt and the Rochau Forest Christmas. In 2000, a MAN rail bus was used between Lübben and Luckau on the occasion of the state horticultural show . Since 2005 the Uerdingen rail bus operated by the cooperating DBV-Förderverein Niederlausitzer Eisenbahn e. V. as the Elbe-Elster-Express between Schlieben and Falkenberg / Elster . This was a citizen's railroad model that was funded by the EU in 2006 and in which the train staff were provided voluntarily from the region. This funding made it possible to repair the vehicle, damaged tracks and the locomotive shed, as well as to rebuild four covered shelters with passenger information. The renovation of the locomotive shed was never finished, and due to the lack of a track connection it was never used.

The Uckro-Luckauer Eisenbahnfreunde association plans to set up a museum between Uckro and Luckau.

Freight transport

Rail freight transport is of crucial importance for the continued operation of the NLE. This could already be documented shortly after the takeover of the line by the commissioning of the siding in the Duben-Alteno industrial park on June 12, 1999. There is a siding to a biogas plant and an open loading siding, which is mainly used for loading wood. The freight traffic was initially carried out by DB Cargo . As part of the MORA C renovation program, the DRE took over the service of the six NLE goods tariff points Lübben-Süd, Duben-Alteno, Luckau, Schlieben, Börnichen-Schlepzig and Krugau (warehouse) as well as Lübben Hbf on January 1st, 2002. This carried out the single wagon traffic (especially wood) until 2003 with its VT 11 tow car . The block train traffic (wood), which has been operated almost exclusively since then , is mainly carried out by private railway companies. In the second half of March 2009, block trains delivered 18-meter-long steel pipes from Europipe to the Alteno open-air loading siding on working days. They were laid after the completion of the planning approval procedure for the Baltic Sea Pipeline Connection Line (OPAL) in the south of Brandenburg.

Route

Starting from the lower part of the Falkenberg (Elster) station , the NLE initially runs on the eastern side of the depot and the Jüterbog – Röderau railway line about one kilometer in a northerly direction, and then increases the distance to two kilometers to Herzberg (Elster) . From Herzberg the route to Beeskow runs essentially in a north-east direction. On the eastern outskirts of Herzberg, the Schwarze Elster is crossed with a larger bridge . As far as Schlieben , the route runs through a lowland valley characterized by agriculture . The newly expanded locomotive shed for the Elbe-Elster-Express has recently been located in Schlieben . Further to the east, a longer ascent begins through southern Fläming to the crossing of the Niederlausitzer Landrücken , which leads through an extensive forest area ( Rochau-Kolpiener Heide ) along the federal road 87 . At the eastern edge of the forest there is a longer section of slope, in the course of which a height difference of 70 meters is overcome to Uckro . After crossing the Berlin – Dresden railway line, the line aligns itself in a 130-degree curve to the northwest in order to reach the Dresden Railway via Langengrassau in Uckro. From there the route runs east to reach the former district town of Luckau through a basin landscape characterized by agriculture . Luckau is roughly in the middle of the route and used to house the NLE depot.

Starting from Luckau, the route takes a north-easterly course, crossing a small plateau between the Berste and Spree lowlands. In the district town of Lübben , the Berlin – Görlitz railway line is reached with a north-westerly bend. Both routes run parallel to Lübben station , with the NLE having its own stop 400 meters away. From there it goes in a 90-degree curve over the main line to the northeast. First of all, the Spreewald biosphere reserve is crossed, bridging the eponymous river near Hartmannsdorf (Niederlausitz). This is followed by a wooded and sparsely populated landscape until the Spree is bridged for the second time near Briescht . The area, which is now again dominated by agriculture, extends to Beeskow . About one kilometer from the city, the Grunow – Königs Wusterhausen railway approaches from the west . Both routes then run parallel to Beeskow, although the NLE used to end in its own Beeskow West station. Since the 1960s, the NLE trains have been led directly to the Beeskow station.
