The decathlon of Tokyo developed until the last discipline to an exciting and high-class thriller. From the start the German Willi Holdorf was in the lead, which he had to hand over to the Soviet shot put specialist Mychajlo Storoshenko after the shot put , but which he took back at the end of the first day with the 400-meter run . On the second day there was a three-way battle between Holdorf, a second German, Hans-Joachim Walde, and the Soviet athlete Rein Aun. From discipline to discipline, the three remained tight. The order up to and including the ninth discipline was always Holdorf before Walde and Aun. The gaps were tight, however, and in view of the 1,500-meter best performances , things actually looked very good for Rein Aun before the last discipline, who was much faster here than his German competitors. Aun was able to overtake Hans-Joachim Walde, but Willi Holdorf always had his opponent in view and he managed to limit the distance to less than 70 meters. He crashed to the finish as an Olympic champion and his opponent Rein Aun caught him there - a great sporting gesture of this decathlete.
The high level of this competition becomes clear if one makes comparisons using a uniform rating system. According to today's rating, Holdorf's performance was 59 points better than Rafer Johnson's Olympic record of 1960 and was only 50 points below Yang Chuan-Kwang's world record , who was present here and finished fifth.
Willi Holdorf won the first German Olympic victory in the decathlon.
For a better classification of the performance, in addition to the official points according to the rating table from 1964, the number of points converted according to the current rating system from 1985 is also given. According to this table, which is valid today, there would have been two shifts: Places 14/15 and 16/17 would have been swapped. Otherwise the order would be unchanged. But these comparisons are only indicative, because the different standards of the time must apply as a basis.
