Because of the Olympic boycott, the Americans were not there, which certainly diminished this competition from the start. But at the start was the Italian world record holder Pietro Mennea, two-time European champion in 1974 and 1978 . Other favorites were Britain's Allan Wells, who had previously won the 100 meters , and the 1976 Jamaican Olympic champion Donald Quarrie. The Cuban Silvio Leonard, over 100 meters at the same time as Wells' Olympic runner-up, was also one of the medal candidates.

Wells had the best start in the final race and hit the home straight as the leader. Leonard and Quarrie came out of the curve just behind him, while Mennea was clearly behind. But on the second half of the track, the Italian was by far the fastest sprinter . He came closer and closer to the leading runners and on the last meters Pietro Mennea pulled past Wells to win the Olympic gold with two hundredths of a second ahead. Allan Wells secured the silver medal. The outcome in the battle for bronze, which Donald Quarrie won ahead of Silvio Leonard, was only very close. Only a hundredth of a second separated these two. Her gap to the front was only a tenth of a second.

This competition did not have to hide from the races of the previous Olympic Games. Even if the Americans were absent, the times achieved were excellent and Pietro Mennea was a well-deserved Olympic champion.
