history

Reichenbach, Freiamt

In the Middle Ages, the area of today's Freiamt was subject to the influence of the three power bearers, Lords of Keppenbach , Tennenbach Monastery and Margraves of Hachberg . With the takeover of the Landgraviate of Breisgau and the Bailiwick of the Tennenbach Monastery, the Hachbergers finally enforced the state rule. In 1344 Ottoschwanden was sold by the Andlau monastery to Hachberg, from 1356 to 1386 parts of today's Freiamt were pledged to Martin Malterer . With the end of the margraviate of Baden-Hachberg in 1415, the area of today's Freiamt came to the Baden margrave Bernhard I and from then on belonged to all of Baden's successors. In 1952 it started in the newly founded state of Baden-Württemberg.

The municipality was formed on July 1, 1971 under the name Ottoschwanden-Freiamt through the voluntary amalgamation of the municipalities of Ottoschwanden and Freiamt and renamed Freiamt on August 16, 1972. Alt-Freiamt was the second largest municipality in terms of area in the old state of Baden .

On January 1, 2013, the Roman Catholic parish of Emmendingen-Teningen was established, to which - apart from the patients in the clinic pastoral care - over 13,000 Catholics in Emmendingen, Freiamt, Sexau and Teningen belong.
