Philip Treacy OBE (* 26. May 1967 in Ballinasloe in County Galway ) is an Irish haute couture - milliner and designer . He regularly equips the members of the British royal family and numerous well-known public figures with his hat creations. Philip Treacy works with many haute couture labels together and has at fashion shows own presentations of his hat models.
Life
Philip Treacy grew up with his eight siblings in a small village near the town of Ballinasloe in western Ireland. In 1985 he began studying at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin . Treacy saw designing hats as a hobby while still a student. In 1988 he won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in London. During his studies, he worked as a freelancer for the fashion designers John Galliano and Rifat Özbek .
His graduation show in 1990 earned him recognition in the international fashion industry and he opened his own shop in London at the home of Detmar and Isabella Blow . Isabella Blow, a well-known Tatler milliner and style editor , helped Treacy start his own career by wearing his hats almost exclusively.
Philip Treacy first worked for Chanel under Karl Lagerfeld and later for Donna Karan , Ralph Lauren , Thierry Mugler , Givenchy , Versace and Valentino . In 1991 Linda Evangelista wore a hat made by Treacy for Chanel on the cover of British Vogue , photographed by French photographer Patrick Demarchelier . Treacy got his first own fashion show during London Fashion Week in 1993, when Kate Moss , Naomi Campbell , Christy Turlington and Stella Tennant presented the all-black hats, among others . As early as the early 1990s, he was named British Accessory Designer of the Year five times .
Treacy has had his own shop since 1994, in which he sells three of his own labels - Silver, Purple and Men’s - for hat creations. In 1997 he expanded his accessory creations to include handbags, gloves and leather goods. In the same year he dressed his first show in New York with his hats.
In 1999 Alexander McQueen , who worked as chief designer at Givenchy, asked him to design the hats for his white collection .
In 1999 he was invited by the Federation Françoise de la Couture to present his hats at the first haute couture show in 70 years, which was exclusively dedicated to hats, at the spring-summer show. In addition to its own annual fashion shows, Treacy equips the shows of Chanel, Valentino and Christian Dior, among others, with mostly extravagant hat creations. In 2002, he dedicated the exhibition When Philip Met Isabella at the London Design Museum to his mentor Isabella Blow with all the hat designs he has created for her since 1990. In the same year his achievements were honored in a separate show at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, at which Naomi Campbell presented the hat models.
Inspired by Isabella Blow, he dedicated his third haute couture show in 2003 to Andy Warhol . In addition to extravagant hats such as the Campbell soup can hat or the banana hat, he completed his Warhol collection with waterproof accessories that were decorated with prints from Warhol.
In 2004, Treacy was commissioned to design the interior for a hotel: the 103-bed The g-Hotel in Galway , which was built in 2005. For the 40th company anniversary of the interior furnishing chain Habitat , he designed the Portrait Chair in 2004 . At the same time, he expanded his line of accessories to include a sunglasses collection.
In 2006 the hatter decorated the exhibition Anglomania: Tradition and Transgression in British Fashion in the Metropolitan Museum with hats from his orchid collection, which were combined with dresses from the 18th century and trains. In the same year he began working with the British sportswear manufacturer Umbro .
For the funeral of his sponsor Isabella Blow in June 2007, Treacy decorated the fashion journalist's coffin with a black frigate hat that he had designed for her in 1995. For the first time he presented his hats at an exhibition during the Royal Ascot horse race. In November 2007, Treacy was named Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Prince Charles in the presence of Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall , at a ceremony at Clarence House for his service to the British fashion industry .
He designed the outfits and headgear for Grace Jones' stage shows at the Massiv Attack Meltdown Festival 2008 and the Hurricane Tour 2009. For the BRIT Awards 2014, Treacy was commissioned to design the statues that will be presented to the winners.
In November 2014, the two-month exhibition Philip Treacy: Hats in the 21st Century of Philip Tracey's hat designs opened at the Chekhov House Museum in Moscow .
style
Philip Treacy's hat models are very diverse, from classic to futuristic creations. In addition to large hats, Treacy also designs elaborate fascinators . He prefers to use high-quality materials in the design of his hats, such as diamonds from the British jeweler Asprey & Garrard, black pearls from Tahiti , hand-turned Yokohama chicken feathers and artificial flowers from the Heide Steyer manufactory .
Treacy has also designed numerous films, including the Harry Potter films and Sex and the City, with hat designs. Depending on the material and effort involved, Philip Treacy hats can cost tens of thousands of pounds sterling .
Philip Treacy's customers
Philip Treacy is considered one of the most influential hat designers today. In 2005, Camilla Parker Bowles wore a hat creation made of curved feathers at her wedding to Prince Charles, a model that she would choose several times over in the next few years in different color variants. Queen Elizabeth II wore numerous designs by Philip Treacy, including at Royal Ascot horse races in 2009. For the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton on April 29, 2011, he created 36 hat creations for the invited guests, including the hats of Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, the princesses Beatrice of York and Eugenie of York , Zara Phillips , Princess Michael of Kent , the Princess Mathilde of Belgium as well as Tara Palmer-Tomkinson and Victoria Beckham . In particular, Treacy's hat for Beatrice of York was judged controversially, which evoked associations in the media with a pig-colored giant pretzel, a toilet seat or an elk antler, but was then auctioned for over 93,000 euros.
In addition to social events such as weddings and the traditional Ascot horse races, Treacy regularly equips actresses and singers with unusual headgear for premieres and extravagant appearances. His favorite customers include Sarah Jessica Parker , Lady Gaga , Kim Cattrall and Emma Watson .
His hat designs are worn by famous women as well as men, including David Beckham , Boy George and Guy Ritchie .
