Putnam County is a county in the state of West Virginia in the United States . The county seat is Winfield .

The county is located in western West Virginia, about 22 miles from the Ohio border, and covers an area of 908 square kilometers, of which 11 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Mason County , Jackson County , Kanawha County , Lincoln County, and Cabell County .
history
Putnam County was formed on March 11, 1818 from parts of Cabell County, Kanawha County and Mason County. It was named after Israel Putnam , a US general in the American Revolutionary War and participant in the Battle of Bunker Hill (1775).

According to the 2000 census , Putnam County had 51,589 people in 20,028 households and 15,281 families. The population density was 58 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.97 percent white, 0.56 percent African American, 0.16 percent Native American, 0.58 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.13 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.59 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.51 percent of the population.
Of the 20,028 households, 35.4 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 64.2 percent were married couples living together, 8.9 percent were single mothers, 23.7 percent were non-families, 20.6 percent were single households and 7.9 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 2.96 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.0 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 7.6 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 30.4 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.5 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 11.6 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 96.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 93.5 men.
The median income for a household in the 41,892 USD , and the median income for a family was 48,674 USD. Males had a median income of $ 40,782 versus $ 23,532 for females. The per capita income was $ 20,471. 7.1 percent of families and 9.3 percent of the population were below the poverty line. 11.3 percent of these were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 7.6 percent were people over 65 years of age.
