Putnam County is a county in the state of West Virginia in the United States . The county seat is Winfield .

The county is located in western West Virginia, about 22 miles from the Ohio border, and covers an area of ​​908 square kilometers, of which 11 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Mason County , Jackson County , Kanawha County , Lincoln County, and Cabell County .

history

Putnam County was formed on March 11, 1818 from parts of Cabell County, Kanawha County and Mason County. It was named after Israel Putnam , a US general in the American Revolutionary War and participant in the Battle of Bunker Hill (1775).
