action

Frank Moses is a retired CIA - top agent . Since he feels lonely, he calls his pension office every month, ostensibly to complain that the check had n't arrived, but actually to chat with the clerk Sarah. During one of these conversations, Moses announced that he was going to Kansas City , where Sarah worked. Sarah offers to let him know when he's there.

At night, Moses is attacked by a killer squad in his house . He succeeds in making all attackers incapable of fighting and leaving his completely destroyed house with the bare essentials. Arrived in Sarah's hometown, he breaks into her apartment and waits for her. He also sees Sarah in danger because of her numerous phone calls and finally kidnaps her, because she doesn't believe him, to a motel .

Hunted by CIA agent William Cooper, who has been assigned to kill them both, Frank tries to find out who wants him dead. He ties Sarah to the bed in the motel while he visits his colleague and mentor Joe in the retirement home to find out more about the killers. Joe, who is now 80 years old and has liver cancer , uses the cut fingers of the killer squad that Frank has brought for more information.

Sarah can now free herself and wants to flee. However, the CIA discovered her whereabouts and tried to kidnap her. At the last second, Moses can save them from falling into the hands of the other side. Sarah is now convinced that Frank wants to protect her.

The trail leads to a murdered reporter who had compiled a kind of death list on which most people are no longer living. Frank and Sarah, who meanwhile trust him, seek out another former colleague, the paranoid Marvin Boggs, who joins them. Marvin tells them that the common connection of all the names on the list is a secret mission that started in Guatemala in 1981 and that one person, Gabriel Singer, is still alive. Singer tells the three that everyone on the list should be silenced who were involved when a village was exterminated. Singer is murdered by a sniper from a helicopter and the team is forced to flee. With the help of former Russian secret agent Ivan Simonov, Frank and Sarah break into the CIA headquarters to steal the secret files. Frank is shot in a bloody fight with William Cooper. Meanwhile, Joe, who escaped an attack on his life, appears again and supports and treats the injured Frank.

Together they visit Victoria, a former cleaner agent who also misses her old life. She removes the bullet from Frank's shoulder. When comparing the reporter's list and the stolen secret files, one name only appears in the reporter's list: Alexander Dunning, an arms dealer with a tap-proof secret room and bodyguards.

Frank, Marvin and Joe infiltrate Dunnings house, overpower and interrogate him. Dunning tells them that the mission was to cover up a massacre by the mentally broken son of a senator who had exterminated an entire village in a drunkenness and is now Vice President Robert Stanton. Stanton is running for president, so he tries to whitewash all the stains on his vest by letting the CIA work through the death list. The FBI has now surrounded Dunnings' house and Cooper is trying to persuade Frank to give up. Frank tells Cooper about the Vice President's corruption, sowing doubts on Cooper, who promises not to be shot and to hear him if he surrenders.

As a diversion, Joe takes Frank's place and comes out of the house disguised as Frank in a hat and coat. Despite Cooper's telling the FBI agents not to shoot, a shot is fired and Joe collapses, fatally hit. Thereupon Victoria, who hides armed together with Sarah on the property near the house, causes confusion with targeted single fire so that Frank and Marvin can escape through a side window in the tumult. Victoria and Sarah also withdraw. However, Sarah falls and is captured. The rest of the group can escape. Frank calls Cooper from his own house a little later and tells him that if something happens to Sarah he is doing something to his family and demands an exchange.

Together with Ivan (apparently the mysterious enemy agent whom Victoria once loved) and a powerful array of weapons, the group gains access to a fundraising gala hosted by the Vice President in Chicago and kidnaps him in front of Cooper. During the subsequent exchange between Sarah and Stanton, arms dealer Dunning and Cooper's boss, Cynthia Wilkes, appear.

Sure of his victory, Dunning brags that he is the mastermind behind the murders, that Cynthia Wilkes works with him and that Stanton is just a straw man and scapegoat, whereupon he shoots Stanton and Frank wants to pin the murder of the vice president.

Cooper seems corrupt enough to play along, but when he ties up Frank, he hands him the key to the handcuffs. The moment Wilkes points her gun at Frank, Cooper shoots Wilkes; Marvin and Victoria kill the bodyguards in the background , and Frank smashes Dunning's larynx.

Cooper lets go of the "old pensioners" and Frank and Sarah want to start a new life, but first Ivan demands the "little favor" that Frank Moses had promised him for his help: Frank can be seen in the last shot of the film and Marvin flee the Moldovan army with a stolen atomic bomb and a wooden wheelbarrow.

criticism

The story is praised for its originality and entertainingness. However, the plot does not seem very plausible in some aspects (for example when Frank Moses explains to Sarah Ross that she has to flee with him, the main target of the killing squads, in order to save her life) or he suppresses the claims to reality when the neighbors get through the complete destruction of a house by a killing squad did not cause alarm.

The figures appear overdrawn. Because of this and through situation comedy, which often addresses age, an absurd tone prevails. As a result, the film does not take itself seriously. There are, however, allusions to real backgrounds, for example when the Vice President has connections to a weapons manufacturer - like Dick Cheney .

The cast and their acting performance are praised. The camera work also appears particularly successful. The spectacular stunts are highlighted in terms of the genre.

Awards

When the nominations for the 68th Golden Globe Awards were announced on January 16, 2011, RED received - Elder. Harder. Better. a nomination in the category of best film - comedy / musical. Three more nominations followed at the 2010 Satellite Awards : Best Picture (Comedy / Musical) and Best Actor (Comedy / Musical) - Mary-Louise Parker and John Malkovich.
