Randolph County is a county in the state of West Virginia in the United States . The county seat is Elkins .

The county is located in northeast West Virginia, about 6 miles to the southeast from the Virginia border, and covers an area of 2,693 square kilometers, one square kilometer of which is water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Tucker County , Pendleton County , Pocahontas County , Webster County , Upshur County, and Barbour Counties .
history
Randolph County was formed on October 16, 1786 from parts of Harrison County. It was named after Edmund Randolph , a US prosecutor, governor of Virginia , US secretary of state, and the first US attorney general.

According to the 2000 census , Randolph County had 28,262 people in 11,072 households and 7,661 families. The population density was 10 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.69 percent white, 1.07 percent African American, 0.16 percent Native American, 0.38 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.16 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.53 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.68 percent of the population.
Of the 11,072 households, 29.8 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 54.7 percent were married couples living together, 9.8 percent were single mothers, 30.8 percent were non-families, 26.3 percent were single households, and 11.9 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.89 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 22.3 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 8.7 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.4 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 15.1 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 101.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 99.7 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 27,299 , and the median income for a family is $ 32,632. Males had a median income of $ 24,751 versus $ 17,819 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,918. 13.4 percent of families and 18.0 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 24.3 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 12.9 percent were people over 65 years of age.
