The River Ribble is a river that crosses North Yorkshire and Lancashire in northern England . The catchment area also includes parts of Greater Manchester near Wigan . The valley of the river is called Ribblesdale .
geography
The Ribble has its origin at the confluence of the Gayle Beck and the Ribblehead near the Ribblehead Viaduct at the Yorkshire Three Peaks .
The river flows through Settle , Clitheroe and Preston before flowing into the Irish Sea between Lytham St. Annes and Southport .
The main tributaries of the Ribble are the Hodder and Calder , which flow near Great Mitton, the Darwen , which is added at Walton-le-Dale , and the Douglas , which flows at Hesketh Bank .
The river is connected to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal as well as the Lancaster Canal (via Ribble Link ). Downstream from Preston, the Ribble was excavated when Preston was an active port; this is no longer done and silt from the river now continues to spread over the (sandy) bays around Fairhaven and St. Annes .
The Ribble Estuary forms part of the Ribble and Alt Estuaries Special Protection Area for Wildlife.
history
The Ribble Way is a long distance hiking trail that largely follows the river. The Ribble marked the northern border of the ancient Kingdom of Mercia . At the time of the Domesday Book , the river formed the northern boundary of an area (known as Inter Ripam et Mersham ) that, according to the Domesday Book, was part of Cheshire , although it was likely not formally part of the county of Cheshire.
The Ribble was apparently known as "Belisama" during Roman times , which may have given Samlesbury its name . Ptolemy 's " Belisama aest. " Alludes to the estuary of the river.
The banks of the Ribble are a possible venue for King Arthur 's tenth battle . Nennius situates it in his Historia Brittonum on the bank of a river called "Tribruit".
Public Works
The reservoir size of the River Ribble is overseen by the Mersey Basin Campaign , a partnership formed in 1985 to improve water quality and support bank regeneration.
Preston City Council published controversial plans to build a dam over the Ribble in its river works proposals. The aim of these proposals is to build a water sports park on a section of the river, together with over 4000 residential units and shops in the floodplain. Local residents oppose these plans. Their arguments are the endangerment of wild life, increased risk of flooding and damage to green belts. These residents started the "Save the Ribble" campaign. Parts of the river are a County Biological Heritage Site .

Surname
The River Ribble is eponymous for the Borough Ribble Valley and the constituency of the same name as well as for the municipality of South Ribble . The Ribble bus company once operated buses in north west England. In addition, call Ribble Steam Railway , Ribble Cycles , a bike manufacturer from Preston and the Ribble Valley Inns after the river.

Wulfric's goods remained together after his death when they went to his brother Aelfhelm, and there still seems to be a connection in 1086 when southern Lancashire was surveyed with Cheshire by the Domesday commissioners, but the two areas seem to have been somehow different from each other and it is not certain that the Shire moot mentioned in the Lancashire section of the Domesday Book and governors were those of Cheshire.
