Roger Schmidt (born March 13, 1967 in Kierspe ) is a German football coach and former player. From the 2020/21 season he will be coach of the Dutch first division club PSV Eindhoven .

Player career

Schmidt played in the regional league for the clubs SC Verl (1995 to 2002) and SC Paderborn 07 (2002 to 2003). This was followed by seasons at SV Lippstadt 08 and Delbrücker SC in the association league .

Coaching career

Beginnings in the amateur field

After Schmidt had played a season at Delbrücker SC, he was there coach for the 2005/06 season. He stayed in this position until the summer of 2007 and led the club from the association league to the safe midfield of the Oberliga Westfalen .

In July 2007 he became a coach at the then top division club Preußen Münster . For this job Schmidt terminated his employment as an engineer at the automotive supplier Benteler and signed a three-year contract with the Prussians. He rose to the regional league with Prussia Münster. On March 19, 2010, the club separated from him when they were in fourth place in the table.

SC Paderborn 07 and Red Bull Salzburg

For the 2011/12 season , SC Paderborn 07 signed Schmidt as the successor to coach André Schubert who had switched to FC St. Pauli . After a successful season with the Paderborn team, Schmidt canceled his contract to go to Red Bull Salzburg in Austria .

In his first year as coach of Red Bull Salzburg he reached second place with the team behind Austria Vienna ; the 77 points and 91 goals scored were record marks in the Red Bull era. Although the club failed in qualifying for the Champions League against Luxembourg representative F91 Dudelange , Schmidt's contract period was extended. In the 2013/14 season he was arithmetically determined as the champion with the team after 28 matchdays. With 105 goals after 33 rounds, the Bundesliga record of SK Rapid Wien was exceeded. In the Europa League you ended the group stage as group winners. In the second round , Ajax Amsterdam was clearly defeated before the team was eliminated in the round of 16 against FC Basel .

Bayer 04 Leverkusen

In April 2014 Schmidt signed a two-year contract as the successor to Sascha Lewandowski as head coach for the German Bundesliga club Bayer 04 Leverkusen from the 2014/15 season .

2014/15 season

Schmidt made his competitive debut as Leverkusen's head coach on August 15, 2014 in the first round of the DFB Cup at SV Alemannia Waldalgesheim , which his team won 6-0. In his first Bundesliga game, he and the team achieved a 2-0 away win at Borussia Dortmund . Karim Bellarabi scored the fastest goal in this competition after nine seconds. In the second half of the season they stayed in the Bundesliga for 528 minutes without conceding a goal, setting a new club record. In the league, they were never worse than sixth place in the table , were leaders on the first three match days and were fourth in the qualification for the Champions League play-offs. In the Champions League 2014/15 they were eliminated in the round of 16 against Atlético Madrid , in the DFB Cup they had to admit defeat to Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals . Shortly after the end of the season, Bayer Leverkusen extended Schmidt's contract to the end of June 2019.

2015/16 season

In his second season in Leverkusen, Schmidt received Markus Krösche, an assistant coach with whom he played at SC Paderborn in the 2002/03 regional league season and whom he had coached in the 2011/12 second league season. With André Ramalho and Kevin Kampl , there were also two players in the squad that Schmidt had already trained in Salzburg. At the end of the first half of the season, the Leverkusen team was fifth, but with six defeats they had already suffered one more than in the entire previous season. In the group stage reached in the Champions League, they reached third place in the Europa League . There Bayer was eliminated in the round of 16 against Villarreal . In the DFB Cup they were eliminated again in the quarter-finals, this time against Werder Bremen . Due to personal misconduct, Schmidt was suspended for three Bundesliga games in the second half of the season . In those games in which the team was coached by Krösche, you only won one point. After Schmidt's return to the bench, Leverkusen won all games between the 26th and 32nd Bundesliga matchday, which meant that his team set a club record. Already at this point in time, the team secured qualification for the group stage of the Champions League with third place in the table. The club record set in the previous season for the longest time without conceding a goal in the Bundesliga was expanded to 588 minutes.

Season 2016/17

Schmidt's third season in Leverkusen began with four wins, four draws and four defeats in the first twelve games. He was again sanctioned for his behavior on the sidelines and, among other things, was given an indoor ban for two games. Again Krösche took over Schmidt's duties during the games. The team was eliminated from the DFB Cup against Sportfreunde Lotte , but won the following Bundesliga game against VfL Wolfsburg . In the group stage of the Champions League they remained undefeated for the first time in the club's history and reached ten points. On December 10, 2016, the association released Schmidt's long-time assistant coach for athletics, Oliver Bartlett, due to differing views. The first half of the Bundesliga ended the team in eighth place in the table, with a total of seven defeats, one more than in the first half of the previous season. In the second half of the season they started with only two wins and four defeats in six games; including a 2: 6 defeat at Borussia Dortmund, which is the first time since 2010 to concede six goals in a league game. Schmidt attested his team “a very good performance” and described the performance in the game as a “step in the right direction” compared to the previous week when they lost 2-0 to 1. FSV Mainz 05 .

On March 5, 2017 - the day after the game in Dortmund - Schmidt was released from his duties in the club. The association justified the exemption as unavoidable and necessary in order not to miss self-set goals. In this context, Managing Director Michael Schade emphasized Schmidt's good dealings with young players and their development under him.

Beijing Guoan

In June 2017, Schmidt signed a contract with the Chinese first division club Beijing Guoan that will run from July 1 . He won the 2018 Chinese Cup with the team and was released at the end of July 2019.

PSV Eindhoven

From the 2020/21 season, Schmidt is the new head coach of PSV Eindhoven . The corresponding contract was concluded on March 11, 2020.

Controversy

On February 21, 2016 Schmidt was expelled from the interior of the stadium by referee Felix Zwayer during the Bundesliga home game against Borussia Dortmund . He had complained to the fourth official after a controversial free kick decision that led to Dortmund's winning goal . However, he refused to leave the interior of the stadium, so the referee stopped the game for about nine minutes and sent both teams to the dressing rooms. When Schmidt was finally seated in the stands, Zwayer whistled the game again. Schmidt was imposed by the sports court of the DFB for unsportsmanlike conduct with an indoor ban for five Bundesliga games, two of which were suspended until June 30, 2017, and a fine of 20,000 euros.

On October 22nd, 2016, shortly after the start of the second half, he got into a verbal clash with the opponent's coach, Julian Nagelsmann , in the 0-3 Bundesliga home game defeat against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim and was expelled from the interior by referee Bastian Dankert . The DFB sports court revoked the probation imposed after the incident in February two days later and suspended Schmidt both for the second round of the DFB Cup against Sportfreunde Lotte and for the away game in the Bundesliga against VfL Wolfsburg . He was also fined € 15,000. Approx. An hour and a half before the start of the game in Wolfsburg, Schmidt was denied access to his team by VfL stadium stewards at that time, although the indoor lock only applied half an hour before the start and after the end of the game and for the time of the game. The Wolfsburg club admitted a misunderstanding.

Schmidt is married and has a son and a daughter with his wife; he has at least three brothers.
