Săsciori ( German Schweis , Hungarian Szászcsór ) is a Romanian municipality in the Alba district in Transylvania .
The place Săsciori is also known under the German names Sassenberg , Sessenberg (or Schewis ) and the Hungarian Nagyfalu (or Scáscsciór ).
Geographical location
The municipality of Săsciori is located in the lower forest , in the southwest of the Transylvanian Basin , north of the Șureanu Mountains (Mühlbacher Gebirge) on the Sebeș (Mühlbach) - a left tributary of the Mureș (Mieresch) - in the southern part of the Alba district. In a small widening of the valley of Drum național 67C - the so-called Transalpina - the place Săsciori is 8 kilometers south of Sebeş (Mühlbach) ; the district capital Alba Iulia (Karlsburg) is about 24 kilometers to the north.

In the area of today's municipality, in the incorporated village of Răchita ( well village ) - the areas are called Vârful Gorunișului , Vârful Apărății by the locals - and in the caves Gaura Jidovului and Gaura Bătrânului , finds were made which point to a settlement from the Neolithic and the indicate early Bronze Age . In the area of the incorporated village of Sebeşel ( Klein-Mühlbach ) - area La Pârloage - Roman gold coins and a head of a statue of a goddess were found.
The place Săsciori was first mentioned in 1345.
The main occupations of the population are cattle breeding, wood processing and pottery.

The highest population (6559) of today's municipality and that of the Romanians (6551) was determined in 1920. The highest population of Germans was registered in 1910, Hungarians (17) in 1992 and Roma (701) in 1977. In addition, in 1890 two residents identified themselves as Slovaks , in 1880 and 1992 one each as Serbs and in 1910 two, in 1890, 1977 and 2002 one each as Ukrainians .
Attractions
- The ruins of a middle-aged peasant castle with an oval bering and two defense towers (south of Săsciori) are listed as historical monuments.
- In the incorporated village of Căpâlna ( chapel village ) - called La Cetate by the locals - there are remains of a Dacian castle ( 45 ° 49 ' N , 23 ° 36' E , "La Cetate"). From here a path leads to the Șurean hut at an altitude of 1743 meters.
