San Giovanni Abbey in Venere
The Abbazia di San Giovanni in Venere is located on a mountain top in the area of the municipality close to the coast . The construction planning began in 1165, but the execution only after 1200. As a predecessor building there was a temple of Venus Conciliatrix, which gave the later Romanesque Benedictine complex its name.
The cloister measuring 42 × 43.5 m was restored to its original form between 1932 and 1935. In 1936 monks from the Order of the Passionists agreed to take over the church, but after lengthy negotiations the contract was not signed until 1954. Since then, the Passionists have painstakingly repaired the facility. Six monks still live here today.
Except for a cornice and blind arcades, the facade does without any decoration. But the portal is the most richly decorated of the time in all of Abruzzo. The garment of three tiered pilasters and a column in front of it is simple, as are the arches of the archivolt . The lunette figures have only survived in fragments (Christ enthroned between Mary and John the Baptist ).
The relief panels date from the years 1225 to 1230. They show scenes from the life of the Baptist - without any chronological connection.
- Left: above decorative relief with two drinking peacocks, below Johannes and two Jews, to whom he explains on a scroll: I am the voice in the desert; next to it probably the visualization of this word. Including in three sections the Annunciation , her encounter with Elisabeth and an unidentifiable figure; finally a kneeling person between two griffins.
- Right: Circumcision of John, left his father Zacharias writes the son's name on a board; including the announcement of the birth of John to (the unbelieving) Zacharias; at the bottom, finally, Daniel in the lions' den.
Left of the portal: embedded tomb of the abbot Odorisius II, who died in 1204, elaborately stepped, formerly mosaic- framed.
