Origin of name

The parish church was built at the end of the 13th century in place of a hunting chapel. It is consecrated to St. John the Baptist , from which arose in the dialect Sailiga (blessed) Hans , today it is called Saiga Hans . The place was then also called St. Johann in der Püchen ( S. Johans in der Puechen , 1580).

coat of arms

Official description of the municipal coat of arms : Shared; Above in green a golden, obliquely left ax and a golden beech leaf, below in gold three red, two-on-one, wide-brimmed hats. The community colors are green-yellow.

The municipal coat of arms approved by the municipal council on March 4, 1983 was created within a competition in the municipality and approved by the Upper Austrian provincial government on April 18, 1983. The ax refers both to the local saint and to the predominant forestry. The beech leaf commemorates the first mention of the place. The red holiday hats in the lower half of the coat of arms were, according to oral tradition, the distinguishing feature of the first clearing settlers , the Spießmoja farmers .

history

The village arose around the church as early as the 13th century and was the center of an important logging area, as the coat of arms shows.

Since the founding of the Duchy of Bavaria, the place was Bavarian until 1779 and came to Austria after the Treaty of Teschen with the Innviertel (then 'Innbaiern'). Briefly Bavarian again during the Napoleonic Wars , since 1814 it has finally belonged to Upper Austria. After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich on March 13, 1938, the place belonged to the Gau Oberdonau . After 1945 the restoration of Upper Austria took place.

On August 18, 2017, a tent overturned during a fire brigade festival due to a violent gust of wind, killing two people and injuring several.

Culture and sights

Local museum
  • Parish church St. Johann am Walde : A Gothic building in which the nave was extended by two bays in 1852 and the 37 m high west tower was built. In 1903 a side aisle with five bays was added to the south . The neo-Gothic high altar comes from the workshop of Georg Wagner from Braunau and was built in 1909.
  • Beandhaus St. Johann am Walde: The Beandhaus is the only museum in St. Johann am Walde. The name is derived from the house name of the previous residents. The museum shows the smallest form of an agricultural unit and impressively shows how difficult life used to be. This museum has been open to the public since 1990.
  • Spießmoja nature reserve: The 'Spießmoja' nature reserve is named after the first settlers in this area, the Spieaßmoja farmers . It consists mainly of a bog in which many rare bog plants can be found.

  • Whitsun festival: Organized by the Unionzweigverein Faustball: A so-called fun tournament takes place on Whitsunday. Clubs from the town and the surrounding area give each other the handle when playing fistball.
  • Parish festival: framed by the Sankt Johann band, the parish organizes a morning pint, which takes place after the morning mass on the parish square.
  • Maschkerer: This custom takes place both in Sankt Johann and, five days later, in Maria Schmolln . On December 31st, New Year's Eve, masked passports go from house to house.
