The Indian Parliament Building (Sansad Bhavan) in New Delhi

The Indian Parliament ( Hindi : भारतीय संसद , Bhāratīya saṃsad ) is a parliament that was established after India's declaration of independence by the Indian constitution on January 26, 1950 . It is located in New Delhi and contains two chambers: the "House of States" ( Rajya Sabha ) corresponds to the House of Lords , and the "House of the People" ( Lok Sabha ) corresponds to the House of Commons . The leader of the majority party in the Lok Sabha is usually appointed Prime Minister of India .

Bicameral parliament

The political system of India is built on the political system of Great Britain , also known as the Westminster system . The construction of the bicameral system with majority voting goes back to structures that were established in British India before Indian independence .

Parliament building

The Parliament Building ( Sansad Bhavan ) is a rotunda, which was planned by the British architects Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker 1912-1913. Construction began in 1921, and in 1927 the building for the meetings was chamber of the princes ( Chamber of Princes ) , the Council of State ( State Council ) and the Central Legislative Assembly ( Central Legislative Assembly opened).

2001 attack

On December 13, 2001, five Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists carried out an attack on the federal parliament, killing 14 people. India initially held two Pakistani extremist groups to be the perpetrators, and the attack deepened tensions between the two countries, leading to the risk of war. Among the perpetrators from Jammu and Kashmir , Mohammad Afzal Guru was the only one who was sentenced to death in 2004 because the Indian courts held him responsible for planning the attack. The death penalty was not carried out on him until February 9, 2013 , after all of his accomplices had already served their sentences and had been released. Politically, the execution against Afzal Guru was linked to the execution of the death penalty against Mumbai assassin Ajmal Kasab in November of the previous year.
