The Heidelstein (also Schwabenhimmel ) is 925.7  m above sea level. NHN high mountain in the High Rhön , part of the German low mountain range Rhön . It rises between Bischofsheim in the Rhön in the Bavarian district of Rhön-Grabfeld and Wüstensachsen in the Hessian district of Fulda with a peak in Bavaria.

The Heidelstein transmitter is located on the western summit of the Heidelstein, and a memorial of the Rhön Club is located on the slightly lower eastern summit . The source of the Ulster is on the northwest slope and the Red Moor cross-country ski center is on the western slope .

The summit region of the Heidelstein is located in the northwest of the Franconian district of Rhön-Grabfeld. The border with Hesse and the district of Fulda runs around 350 m northwest of its summit. The mountain is located in the Rhön Biosphere Reserve and on the border of the Bavarian Rhön Nature Park in the southeast and the Hessian Rhön in the northwest. About 4.6 km north of the mountain is Wüstensachsen (capital of the municipality of Ehrenberg ; Hesse), 8.2 km east-southeast of the core town of Markt Oberelsbach (Bavaria), 6.5 km south of the core town of the town of Bischofsheim in der Rhön (Bavaria) and 6.5 km (as the crow flies ) west of the core town of Gersfeld (Hesse).

Rhine-Weser watershed

The Rhine-Weser watershed runs over the Heidelstein . The Ulster rises on its northwest flank and flows into the eastern Weser source river Werra . The Els (Elsbach) rises on the eastern slope and flows into the Streu . The Sonder , which flows into the Els, and the Schwarzbach, which flows into the Brend , arise on the southern slope ; the three last-named rivers belong to the catchment area of ​​the Rhine .

From the main western summit ( 925.7  m ) of the Heidelstein, the height of which is usually given as around 926  m , a ridge about 1 km long runs to the 912.6  m high eastern summit. In the official topographic maps , the name Heidelstein can be found for both peaks and the name Schwabenhimmel for the east peak . Deviating from this, the official guide of the Rhön Club only describes the eastern summit as Heidelstein , but the entire mountain as Swabian sky . About 130 m northwest of the main summit is a trigonometric point at a height of 923.3  m .

Natural allocation

The Heidelstein belongs in the natural spatial main unit group Osthessisches Bergland (No. 35), in the main unit Hohe Rhön (354) and in the subunit Central Rhön (354.1) to the natural area Lange Rhön (354.11), with its northeastern landscape in the main part of this area to the south into the natural area Ostabfall der Langen Rhön (354.12), to the west into the natural area Wasserkuppenrhön (354.10) and to the north into the natural area Upper Ulstertal (354.13).

Protected areas

Parts of the Lange Rhön nature reserve ( CDDA no. 7005; designated in 1982; 32.91  km² in size) are located in the Bavarian areas of the Heidelstein, with the focus north-northeast of the mountain and the NSG Kesselrain (CDDA no. 82056 ; 1940; 31  ha ). On the Bavarian side there are parts of the landscape protection area Bayerische Rhön (CDDA-Nr. 396113; 959.8 km²), the fauna-flora-habitat- area Bayerische Hohe Rhön (FFH-Nr. 5526-371; 192.6 km²) and the bird sanctuary of the same name (VSG no. 5526-471; 19.029 km²). Those of the LSG Hohe Rhön (CDDA no. 378482; 1997; 44.2 km²), the FFH area Hochrhön (FFH no. 5525-351; 48.09 km²) and the VSG Hessische Rhön (VSG- No. 5425-401; 360.8 km²).

The north-west, west and south-west flanks of the Heidelstein are covered with forest, its mountain top is largely unforested and covered with grass turf. Its eastern flank is only forested in lower regions. The existing spruce stands were or are being removed more and more during renaturation measures. The rare Turkish lily grows in some places and there is a small occurrence of wild lilies of the valley near the memorial .

The Heidelstein transmitter from Deutsche Telekom is located on the Heidelstein . Its 218 m high guyed tubular steel mast was erected in 1969. Broadcast TV - and FM -Hörfunkprogramme. In 2006, the broadcast of analog television programs was stopped in favor of DVB-T .

Hiking and viewing opportunities

Sections of several long-distance hiking trails such as the Rhön-Rennsteig-Wanderweg , Heidelsteinweg ( HWO  5) and Hochrhöner as well as the European long-distance hiking trail E3 and European long-distance hiking trail E6 lead over the Heidelstein . The quickest way to get to the summit area is from the Schornhecke car park in the north or from the car park on the Roten Moor (on the B 278 Bischofsheim - Wüstensachsen) from the west . The Heidelstein is a popular panoramic mountain. Its forest-free areas offer various views in all directions, including in the south to the Kreuzberg ( 927.8  m ) and with excellent views to the west to the Großer Feldberg ( 879  m ) in the Taunus , to the north to the Hohe Meißner ( 753 m ) , 6  m ) or east to the Thuringian Forest .

On the eastern tip of the mountain there is a memorial of the Rhön Club , where many members gather every year on the third Sunday in September to commemorate deceased hikers. In the immediate vicinity of the memorial, there is a cross made from the wire mesh of the former border fence between West and East Germany as a reminder of the division of the country that has been overcome.

Transport links

A part of the Fladungen –Bischofsheim section of the Hochrhönstrasse (here part of the Bavarian state road  2288), which connects the federal road 285 (northeast) with the B 279 (south), runs roughly in a north-south direction over the eastern slope of the Heidelstein . From the B 279, the B 278 branches off at Bischofsheim , which leads northwards past the mountain to Wüstensachsen. From there the L 3395 (Hessen), which merges into the St 2286 (Bavaria) and there crosses the St. 2288, to Oberelsbach.
