Schwarzburg suzerainty

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Several parts of the area in central and southern Thuringia were referred to as Schwarzburger Oberherrschaft . They belonged to the possessions of the Counts of Schwarzburg since the 12th century and thus initially to the Grafschaft Schwarzburg . In 1571 this was divided according to the Treaty of Speyer . The counties of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen and Schwarzburg-Frankenhausen in Northern Thuringia, which together form the Schwarzburg Unterherrschaft and the Grafschaft Schwarzburg Oberherrschaft, were newly created at that time . As a separate state with the capital Rudolstadt , it existed for only three years (from 1571 to 1574), but the designation of suzerainty for all Schwarzburger areas south of Erfurt has remained. In 1574 the county of Schwarzburg-Oberherrschaft was divided into the counties of Schwarzburg-Arnstadt in the west and Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt in the east.
