The Sesvenna group is a mountain group in the central eastern Alps . The countries Austria with the federal state Tyrol , Switzerland with the canton Graubünden and Italy with the province South Tyrol have a share .
Around two thirds of the subgroup are located on Swiss territory, where they are referred to as the Lower Engadine-Münstertal region or the Münstertal Alps . Only a small corner in the northeast near Nauders is in Austria.
Boundary and neighboring mountain groups
The name of the subgroup, its definition as a subgroup of the Central Alps of the Eastern Alps and its boundaries are based on the Alpine Club division of the Eastern Alps (AVE), which is defined according to orographic criteria:
- In the north and west, the Inn ( Lower Engadine ) forms the border from the Finstermünz Pass (between Pfunds and Nauders ) upstream via Susch to the Silvretta
- The Inn from Susch to Zernez to the Albula Alps
- In the southwest, the Val da Spöl , the Val Ova dal Fuorn and the Münstertal (Val Müstair) form the border with the Ortler Group and the Livigno Alps . Both valleys are connected by the Ofen Pass . The Münstertal runs the border in the south to the Vinschgau near Glurns . The Ofenpass connects the Sesvenna group with the Ortler Alps.
- Between Glurns and the Finstermünzpass, the Upper Venosta Valley and the Reschenpass form the border in the east. The Reschenpass connects the Sesvenna group with the Ötztal Alps .
In Switzerland and in Italian-speaking countries, other classifications are common:
- The Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) divides the Swiss part of the Alps, including the part in the Eastern Alps, primarily along the cantonal borders. The parts of the Alps in Graubünden are known as the Bündner Alps . These are further subdivided. The area dealt with here is called the Lower Engadine-Münstertal . It only includes the Swiss part of the Sesvenna group, but goes beyond this on Swiss soil and also includes parts of the Ortler Alps that are on Swiss territory ( Monte Cavallaccio , Pizzo della Forcola / Stilfserjoch , Umbrailpass ), as well as the Livigno -Alps ( Monte Sumbraida ).
- The Club Alpino Italiano (CAI) divides the Alps into relatively large sub-groups in its official division for Italy. The area of the Sesvenna group then belongs to the Alpi Retiche ( Rhaetian Alps ) . However, this is a huge group compared to the subgroups of the AVE. It stretches between the Splügen Pass and Timmelsjoch and between the Inn Valley and the Adda Valley .

The highest peak is the eponymous Piz Sesvenna ( 3204 m above sea level ). Other important three-thousanders are:

Protected areas
The Swiss National Park includes larger parts of the Sesvenna group. Switzerland currently has only one national park. With its peripheral areas, it is recorded as a Swiss National Park and peripheral areas as a landscape of national importance No. 1915.

Huts
There is only one Alpine Club hut in the Italian part of the Sesvenna group :
- Sesvennahütte : Altitude: 2256 m, open in summer from mid-June to the end of October and in winter from late February to mid-May, 78 mattress dormitories, winter room with 6 dormitories open, valley location: Schlinig near Mals in Vinschgau, walking time from Schlinig: 1.75 hours
There is another hut in the Swiss part of the Sesvenna group:
- Lischanahütte / Chamanna Lischana: altitude 2500 m, managed in summer from the beginning of July to the beginning of October, 42 mattress dormitories, valley location: Scuol in the Lower Engadine, walking time: 4 hours
Long-distance / long-distance hiking trails
The Via Alpina , a cross-border long-distance hiking trail with five partial trails through the entire Alps, also runs through the Sesvenna group. The Via Alpina Red Trail runs through the Sesvenna group in two stages:
- Stage R67 runs from Scuol in the Lower Engadine to S-charl
- Stage R68 runs from S-charl to Taufers in the Münstertal
