places

The municipality consists of several villages that z. Some of them have grown together due to spacious, water-rich new districts. The villages are: Broek op Langedijk, Oudkarspel, Noord- and Zuid-Scharwoude, St. Pancras and the northern half of Koedijk. The southern part of Koedijk belongs to the city of Alkmaar . The municipal administration is based in Zuid-Scharwoude.

Location and economy

The municipality is located directly north of Alkmaar on the North Hollandsch Kanaal (Canal Alkmaar- Den Helder ). It is located in an area that was originally very swampy and rich in water. There are still many trenches and large ponds here, which are not used to beautify the newly built district, but rather represent water salvage. The very fertile soils ( clay , loam ) made it possible from the 17th century, on larger areas vegetables grow. Langedijk has been the epitome of cabbage ever since . All types of cabbage are grown here. The harvests are auctioned on site.

Broeker Veiling Museum

The listed , over 120 year old auction building, in which the goods could be presented by boat and then transported over the water again after the sale, is now the Museum Broeker Veiling for auctions in the Dutch style ("veiling bij afslag").

The operating principle of such an auction is as follows: At the beginning, a (too high) price is displayed on a round plate with numbers with the help of a pointer that resembles that of a large clock. Then the hand of the "veilingklok" (literally: auction clock) is slowly moved and shows an ever lower price. Who is the first to say "mijn!" (= "mine!") calls, is the buyer, at the price that the pointer shows at that moment. An electronically operated display panel was later introduced, whereupon buyers could bid using a remote control built into the seat. This system is still in use throughout the Netherlands, including at auctions of flowers, eggs, ornamental plants and other Dutch agricultural and horticultural products. In the Broeker Veiling museum, the tourist can try to buy a small batch of flowers or vegetables in the manner described above.

The metal and food industry, trade and the service sector are other industries that are important to Langedijk. The proximity to the medium-sized city of Alkmaar makes it a popular residence for commuters.

history

A sand ridge was already settled in the area of this community at the time of Christ. In the 10th century it came into the possession of the Abbey of Egmond , whose monks had a 7.5 km long dike raised to stop the many floods in this swamp. The individual villages were built around chapels in the 12th and 13th centuries. In 1573 the area suffered greatly from the siege of Alkmaar . Also in 1799 the area was the scene of wars between French and Russian troops linked to the Dutch and English.

The inhabitants dredged the mud since the Middle Ages and thus raised their soil, creating a landscape of many plots separated by water (land of 1000 islands). Only in the 20th century, when the country roads became more and more necessary, did this situation change significantly. But some parts of the "island landscape" are still preserved.
