In cycling , around 230 athletes competed in a total of 50 competitions at the 2016 Summer Paralympics , 17 on the track and 33 on the road.
The program included sprints , individual pursuits , 1000-meter time trials on the track as well as road races and individual time trials . The track competitions were held in the Rio Olympic Velodrome , the road competitions on Pontal , a peninsula near Rio.
The most successful nation was Great Britain with a total of 21 medals, including twelve gold medals. The British also provided the Games' most successful female athlete: Sarah Storey won three gold medals. Second place in the medal table was taken by Germany with a total of 15 medals. The oldest German participant, Hans-Peter Durst , won two of the gold medals in the tricycle category T. Austria placed 14th in the medal table with two silver medals, and the mixed relay of handbikers won a bronze medal for Switzerland.
The Iranian cyclist Bahman Golbarnezhad had an accident on the last day of the competition . The athlete, who was missing a lower leg and was competing in the Paralympics for the second time, had a serious fall in the C4-5 road race, suffered cardiac arrest after arriving at the hospital and died shortly afterwards. There was a minute's silence for him at the graduation ceremony. It was the first death in Paralympic history.
Performance classes
The performance classes in paracycling are differentiated according to discipline:
- Cycling ( racing bike ): C1 - C5, with C1 denoting the greatest impairment
- Tandem for the visually impaired who ride with a visually impaired pilot: B.
- Handbike : H1 - H4
- Tricycle : T1 - T2
