The St. Barbara Church is a Catholic church in the Mülheim district of Dümpten . The current church building was built between 1953 and 1955 in the New Objectivity style. The architect was Alfons Leitl . It was inaugurated on March 20, 1955. In 1968 the interior was redesigned according to the rules of the 2nd Vatican Council and received a new altar and a new Walcker organ. Over the years the church has become a living archive for the Dümpten parish. In addition to liturgical and cross-community objects of church work, there are numerous sacred works by contemporary artists. In 2008 it was one of the first churches in the Essen diocese to receive an electronic offering box.

Since December 1, 2006, St. Barbara has been the seat of the parish of the same name in the north of Mülheim. It includes the former parishes of St. Barbara, Christ König, St. Engelbert, St. Mariae Rosenkranz , as well as the Croatian parish Sveti Leopold Mandic at the church of St. Albertus Magnus and the urn burial site in the Church of the Resurrection of the Holy Cross.

In May 2013 the church was included in the route of industrial culture , themed route sacred buildings .

history

The St. Barbara parish in Dümpten was founded in 1884. As it became too tight in the parish of St. Marien due to industrialization and the growing number of parishioners, a church building association was founded. He took over the previously unused emergency church of the Styrum parish and also bought building land in order to build a church building with a rectory to relieve the burden. The collected donations were not enough, however, and in the end more money had to be raised to complete the project. It took until 1887 for the new church to be inaugurated.

With the incorporation of Unterstyrum and Unterdümpten to Oberhausen , St. Joseph was parish off from St. Marien. The newly created community in the Mülheim part was raised to a parish in 1903. From 1910 on, the idea of building a new church building for the growing industrial site came up. It was not until 1929 that the idea was taken up again. To finance the Dümpten Church, a collection was held in all the churches of the Archdiocese of Cologne . The church should cost 175,000 marks. The collection raised 16,736.50 marks. Ultimately, the construction project failed due to the effects of the global economic crisis in 1931.

During the Second World War, bombing raids by the Allies in 1943/1944 destroyed the church building. Since the plans for the construction of a new church were rejected by the British occupying forces after the end of the war, the later parish hall served as an emergency church from 1946. In 1952 the church building association resumed its activity and decided to build the new St. Barbara church at the foot of the Schildberg. The foundation stone was laid in 1953 and it was inaugurated in 1955. In 1968, major renovations took place in which the interior was redesigned. The former Klais organ from 1963 was replaced by a Walcker organ.

As a Catholic church with a mining tradition, the community also feels very close to the miner, trade unionist and Nazi resistance fighter Nikolaus Groß from Niederwenigern (Hattingen) who was beatified by Pope John Paul II . In 2001 a memorial cross was set up at the church for him and his fellow campaigners in the Catholic resistance, Otto Müller and Bernhard Letterhaus . In his honor, the community composed a musical that is performed every year on the anniversary of his death in January.

With the diocese reform in 2006, St. Barbara became one of the three major parishes in Mülheim an der Ruhr.
