Star Kypros (Greek spelling Στάρ Κύπρος ) is an annual national beauty pageant in the Republic of Cyprus . The organizer of the competition prefers the English version of the title, Star Cyprus , for international communication .

The winners receive the title Star Kypros , the next placed Miss Kypros , Miss Carlsberg , Miss Mediterranean . Today Star Kypros represents her country at the Miss Universe . Miss Kypros is competing for the title of Miss World , Miss Carlsberg for Miss Europe and Miss Mediterranean for Miss International .

In 2009 the titles Miss Carlsberg and Miss Mediterranean were not awarded. Dimitra (Demetra) Olympiou participated in Miss Universe 2010, Chrystalla Tsialli in Miss World 2009 and Andrea Kkolou in Miss World 2010. The 2010 national competition apparently did not take place.

Cyprus claims the oldest competition of its kind, as Aphrodite herself was born there - the ancient goddess of beauty and love. In the judgment of Paris between the three most beautiful goddesses of Olympus - Hera , the wife of the almighty Zeus , goddess of strength, Athena , goddess of wisdom and fortitude, as well as Aphrodite - the Trojan prince presented them with a golden apple as a prize. So much for the legend as described by the Greek author Homer in his Iliad .

The first modern Cypriot beauty pageant took place in 1956, at that time the title Miss Kypros (Μίσ Κυπροσ) / Miss Cyprus was awarded. In 1971 the Carlsberg Brewery took over the organization and financing of the events, and since 1988 they have been held as part of the Carlsberg Festival. The Miss election has been broadcast live on television since 1989.

Only candidates from the Greek southern part of the island take part in this beauty contest. The Cypriot Turks in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus have two beauty contests for women and one contest for men. See Miss KKTC .
