history

The place name "Sulzeberg" was first mentioned in 1249. Around 1400 "Smaltzhuben uff dem Sultzberg" were mentioned, which had to deliver lard and cheese to the Count of Bregenz. In the late Middle Ages Sulzberg became an independent parish and place of jurisdiction for the Sulzberg-Doren, Riefensberg and Ober Langeegg area .

With a desertification campaign carried out in 1772, closed farm estates were created and the peasant ownership and management conditions improved significantly. In addition to this extended scattered settlement, the village center, which is characteristic of Sulzberg and mainly consists of inns, developed on the heights of the ridge.

In the Biedermeier period there was a brief bathhouse and a sulfur spring was used. The healing spring is said to have helped primarily with gout .

The Habsburgs ruled the places in Vorarlberg alternately from Tyrol and Upper Austria (Freiburg im Breisgau). From 1805 to 1814 the place belonged to Bavaria , then again to Austria . The municipal border opposite the neighboring Allgäu towns has been the state border since 1814. The village of Thal belonged to Scheffau from 1785 to 1820, and to Sulzberg from 1820 to 1881 and has been its own parish ever since. Sulzberg has belonged to the Austrian state of Vorarlberg since it was founded in 1861. The place was part of the French zone of occupation in Austria from 1945 to 1955.

Population development

Strong population growth in the 18th and 19th centuries made the municipality with the area of Doren, which was part of Sulzberg until 1847, the most populous municipality in the Bregenzerwald (1754: 1,200 inhabitants, 1837: 2,539 inhabitants).

Since the beginning of this century, and especially since 1950, the population development has been explained by the progressive improvement of road connections in all directions and by the construction of goods roads. The reason for the increase in the population since 1981 is a strongly positive birth balance, while the migration balance fluctuates around zero.

politics

The Sulzberg municipal council consists of 18 members. In the 2015 municipal council elections , the Sulzberg citizens' list reached 11, the Zukunft Sulzberg list 5 and the Thaler list 3 seats. Mayor is Helmut Blank from the Sulzberg citizens' list.

coat of arms

The coat of arms of the community Sulzberg shows in a silver shield a black, forward-turned ox head over a green three-mountain. The coat of arms was awarded by the Vorarlberg state government on February 1, 1929. The coat of arms designed by church archivist Andreas Ulmer can probably be traced back to the agricultural expansion of the Sulzberg.
